The game was actually finished. You can emulate it or watch gameplay videos on YbueTube. Looks hilarious, but it looks like it wouldn't be as fun as Mortal Kombat. But on the other hand, it's 4 players.
People who don't realize that Super Mario Sunshine is basically Super Mario 128 should be tortured. It was just a dumb codename for Super Mario 64's followup.
Also, to hell with Glover. Ravenblade should be on the list. (Retro's never-finished pre-Metroid Prime project)
Even more so, Starcraft Ghost. Half the games on the list weren't even cancelled, they were just rumored and never materialized.
Miyamoto has stated that the concepts of Mario 128 were put into Pikmin and Mario Galaxy, not into Mario Sunshine.
Have you seen the Mario 128 video? It's a perfect cross between Pikmin and Galaxy.
Oh I know that Mario 128's ideas ended up in Pikmin/Galaxy (I'm one of those poor bastards whos treats every nintendo rumor as gospel). Let me clarify what I meant: Mario 128, such as it was, was a loose assembly of ideas for the next Mario game, and a tech demo. Ultimately it would have just been the next Mario game. Sunshine ended up being the next Mario game, so once it came out...Super Mario Sunshine kind of stole it's status as the next Mario game. The fact that 128 was gonna be Super Mario 64's sequel (augmented by Sunshine's mediocrity) I think is what gives 128 it's near-legendary status.
Crusty VGchartz old timer who sporadically returns & posts. Let's debate nebulous shit and expand our perpectives. Or whatever.

Huh? Details?
look up videos on youtube...interviews and history of the games development. It had the fisheye view way before Mario Galaxy and would have been awesome had sega bothered back then with the saturn
Basically it was the 3D Sonic game that everyone wanted for the Sega Saturn, cancelled when Sega decided it wasn't worth continuing to care about the Saturn
That also reminds me of the cancelled Sonic the Hedgehog 4 for Genesis. Sonic and Tails would be bound together by some sort of bungee cord, as i recall
It was 3D in the sense that Mario Kart 64 was, though. 3D worlds, but not 3D characters or items. It actually looked pretty awesome
That was no Sonic 4. It's called Sonic Crackers and it was a prototype for Knuckles Chaotix. So that game wasn't technically cancelled.
Metroid Dread is the game on the list I want most. I don't care if, like SM128, "bits and pieces" are recycled into a new game or the title changes or whatever. I just want a main series, 2D Metroid game. Seeing "Metroid IV" on Fusion for the first time was a fantastic moment; now I want to see a "Metroid V" and I'll know it will be good.
