Forums - Nintendo - Do you still expect the Wii to have sold 50 M by the end of March?

resulted from the popularity of some rather faddish titles. They need more successful core and hc games or their fortunes will begin to stagnate worldwide while those of Sony and maybe Microsoft although they don't have the same caliber of games on the way as does Sony until DQX and the next Mario and Zelda arrive in 2010.

Slowdown?? really? it sells about double the amount of Wii's now then during the same time last year and this without any games worth buying for the last couple of months....

Hell not even PS3 or 360 could outsell the Wii during the week when KZ2 and Halo Wars was released.

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

And shepherds we shall be,

For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints

@BT -  Yet you seem to count out a few key titles here. Monster Hunter 3, Cursed Mountain (which I expect to be a sleeper hit), MadWorld, Conduit, Punch Out, Wii Sports Resort. These are all hitting the market within the 1st half of this year, and Im not going through a full list of what other possible games might bring positive reactions.

Think about it from the PS3 perspective, since that's the point you're trying to make. Killzone 2 is out, after Resident Evil 4, what other big games are out there on the way? Which will be system movers? Which can I get on XB360 or PC instead? This needs to be considered in order to have a solid basis for expecting the PS3 to rise up and not flounder.

@TRWoo I am predicting a sales slowdown for Wii because I think that by bringing gamers what they want -- the best games on the market as they have been doing and that as more people see how much more the PS3 is capable of than the Wii that it will basically dominate the later part of the gen as the Wii did the early part and once the PS3 and its game library get rolling all that the Wii will be able to counter with are better games and pricecuts. Nintendo failed to really give gamers what they wanted in '08 and that is being reflected in their lowered sales numbers in Japan while 360 and PS3 numbers have close to being as high or have been even higher as of late. Now, if you've seen THotD commercial that ends by talking about how the Wii is getting hardcore now, that is actually the first positive message out of Nintendo after failing to deliver the promised core games last year. They will need more successful core games to remain as successful as they have been as most of the Wii's early success was

Well, you'll probably be wrong for the same reason that GTAIV, MGS4, LBP, CoD4, Gears2, Killzone2, and many other games haven't stopped the Wii yet. If Nintendo is purely going for consoles sold, then all they need to do is cater to the Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii crowd. Honestly of all the Wii's I've seen sold in the last year, every one of them got bought with 1 or the other game. Not new games in the last month, but games from last spring. Wii sports is still a major seller to this day. I was in a store, and people were asking if it came with those sports games that are so much fun (refering to Wii Sports).

besides, I thought Microsoft and Sony weren't competing with Nintendo

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

About the games you mention, there is really little evidence that any of those will sell well. None of the more hc games that have appeared on the Wii have done that well up to this point. Wii Sports Resort will be a big test for Nintendo as it will show if their new market is really that interested in new games. Do the majority of those people even what motion plus is and would they feel motivated to buy it? Monster Hunter is also going to be on PSP. The game is more popular in Japan and PSP is more popular there as well. System sellers on PS3? All the usual ones that are coming, FF is more popular in the West than DQ, plus I'm expecting Hideo's Special Project to be coming to the PS3 and thanks to the success of the Yakuza series on the PS3 a certain special cinematic action adventure from one of the producers at Sega that is rated right up there with Kojima and Miyamoto that many fans have been waiting a long time for.

I still say 60 million by the end of 2008.

Wow, you really go out on a limb here.  How very mavericky of you.

Its true, that since these are mostly 3rd party titles with new IP I mentioned, that their success is hard to predict. As for past HC wii games, the 2 Resident Evil games have done quite well, over a mil each I think? Even the HotD 2&3 did well enough for Sega to make a brand new one. Of course, this is known IP, which makes a difference. As for MH, the basis of the game sounds like it would work well with the Wii controls. Also, MH3 is an exclusive for the Wii, PSP is getting a diff version last I read.

I don't know if people out there know what motion plus is, but they wil easily understand that there will be a 2nd Wii Sports game. Since its one of the most played titles on the Wii, I'm sure that the announcement of more of that series will get motion plus into their hands and they will learn what it does.

Is there a set date in 2009 for FF? Do any of the other games you mentioned have set 2009 release dates? You mention games by developers but no titles, which is why I ask. A game coming out this year should be well under way in its development and should be in beta testing or at least soon be.
