As a whole, this year so far on Japan have been:

Wii: ~317k this year verse ~855 last year. Ouch: that's like 63% down.
HD consoles: ~295 this year verse ~328 last year. Should start going up yoy in two weeks, for both consoles.

Should the trend keep and Wii will sell around 1.1m on Japan this year, most likely being outsold by the HD twins and even by PS3 alone, if it keeps the pace through the year and FFXIII releases this holidays.

After Resident Evil 5 next week there's NOTHING for the HD twins that appeals in Japan. So although PS3 has a very good week it will very likely go below 10k very soon. 360 obviously as well.

Wii has a very bad start of the year and Nintendo and 3rd parties are to blame but the Wii hasn't got a pricecut yet, hell it's not even bundled with a game. And there has been no compelling software for ages. And still for 2009 it sells the same as the HD twins combined, while these have seen Star Ocean and Yakuza, two major releases, in that period.

Wii still has two Monster Hunter games (and despite what people say MH3 will likely sell close to, if not over a million) a mothership Tales game a Final Fantasy spin-off and a few smaller JRPGs. All this next to Nintendo's own games and Motion Plus.

There's no change in hell that Wii will be outsold by the HD twins this year. Not by far. Even if FFXIII actually releases this year, which is highly unlikely.

You are assuming Wii has an inherent selling potential, what can actually be true on Americas but no way in hell is happening on Japan quite now. Well, it happened 2007 and 2008 to a slightly lesser extent while it has been total crap on 2009.

After the years' end boost, Wii kept falling from were it stopped before the holidays.

Nobody stills know how well PS360 will hold up on the japanese mainstream consumer views after all these huge titles are released. Plus X360 is cheaper than Wii, and PS3 has still to meet a reasonable pricing.

You forget that after RE5 there are no big games for the HD twins for a long while (or maybe one semi one like BKK said). GT5 and FFXIII won't be there this year. Wii gets the bigger core games from now on. Also Dynasty Warriors 3 is on Wii, all these combined should definitely bring Wii back.

You forget that PS3 has all but 3 of the biggest PS2 series already released on its platform and it didn't do a whole lot. FF and GT will definitely be big and KH is not yet known, but other than that we're basically seeing PS3's biggest regular week of the year right now.

Not that it's bad, but people here act like Wii is dead, while it didn't have ANY games released lately/no pricecut/no bundle etc, and PS3 is suddenly the king, while it had MGS, DMC, Mosou, Yakuza, Winning Eleven (timed), Minna and GT5P. And all these very big franchises in Japan brought the PS3 somewhere close to 3 million sold.

Well you have a point saying Wii will get some games from now on while PS360 won't. Although I keep my point: the HD twins will keep selling quite fairly while the Wii will keep down on the upcoming months.

At least while there are no new games for it.

Why should you just assume that GT5 and FF13 won't make it out in Japan?

FFXIII because Wada more or less already said that and because it would be a bad business decision to launch your two by far biggest franchises in the same financial year.

GT5 because PD said not to expect the game this year. With their reputation of being terribly slow that more or less points towards a 2010 release.

Yes, but don't count them out completely.

star ocean 4 doing decently. also ppl need too realize square-enix will go where the money is and m$ has the money too spend and sony doesnt for exclusives, and for ppl saying square-enix should make their rpg's multiplatform. if u want that , that means ffv13 needs to go on both systems as well. ps3 doing very well , nice job ps3.

@BengaBenga

Im pretty sure that the FFXIII Demo will say differently to your HD twins have nothing after RE5 claim

Black Women Are The Most Beautiful Women On The Planet.

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi
