Forums - Gaming - What if FFVI was released on PS1 in 3D?

If FFVI made in 3D for PS1, would FFVII still get so much recognition?  I personally think that most of FFVII's fanbase was created on people either playing FF for the first time or playing a 3D FF for the first time.  Are graphics the main part of its popularity?

(I'm not saying FFVII is a bad game btw, just asking since I know a lot of people here prefer VI)

I would think so. It seems to me that FFVII's success is more attributable to being in the right place at the right time with the right marketing than to being a superior Final Fantasy. I mean, if the game that was FFVIII came out in place of VII, people probably would have eaten it up just the same. Likewise for some hypothetical 3D FFVI, I suppose.

I agree with badgenome, whilst many like to credit FF7 for being one of the things that popularised Japanese culture/games/etc in western countries, it was really just at the right place at the right time.

Also, I'm not sure how I'd feel about a 3D FF6, one of the best things about that game was how much emotion a 2D sprite could emote.

Yeah, I'm still amazed every time I play those old SNES games (most recently Chrono Trigger) by how much the simplicity of the graphics really helps the story. The part with Robo leaving at the end (has anybody not played Chrono Trigger yet?) still brings a tear to my eye.

PS1 era 3D games just haven't aged as well, IMO. Especially FFVII. Yuck.

I don't think FFVI would have been quite as huge as VII.

Even if everyone agreed FFVII is inferior to FFVI (we don't all, I know), it doesn't guarantee the game would be more popular. I have a feeling there are other things FFVII has over VI - the "cool" factor (big sword!!1), the story is more personal (Cloud as the definite main character), the game's darker theme, the art by Nomura, etc.

That's my take on it, anyway.
