I agree with badgenome, whilst many like to credit FF7 for being one of the things that popularised Japanese culture/games/etc in western countries, it was really just at the right place at the right time.
Also, I'm not sure how I'd feel about a 3D FF6, one of the best things about that game was how much emotion a 2D sprite could emote.
