I would think so. It seems to me that FFVII's success is more attributable to being in the right place at the right time with the right marketing than to being a superior Final Fantasy. I mean, if the game that was FFVIII came out in place of VII, people probably would have eaten it up just the same. Likewise for some hypothetical 3D FFVI, I suppose.
