Forums - Gaming - IGN: Is Final Fantasy VII overrated?

FFVII was great stuff. But yeah it's a bit overrated.
People tend to pretty much nail me to a cross when I say I enjoyed VII more than VI, although I had played VI before I played VII. I thought IX was superior to both.
I hate VIII, though. Every FF I've played, including spin-offs, are superior to VIII.
And on a final note, Chrono Trigger is superior to all Final Fantasies.

FFVII is my favourite game ever, so for me it's not overated

One thing I don't get is why it surprised people when Aeris died. It was one of the most heavily foreshadowed events in the whole series.

explain

Sorry that I'm late to explain this, but it mostly came in the fact that Aeris insisted, over and over, that she would be the one to sto Meteor, and it was implied over and over that doing this would require her to be alone. Cloud's visions of her, the walk through the woods, the entire sequence leading up to going after the White materia - all of it implied that Aeris wasn't going to stick around for very long.

It didn't make it less impactful. It was probably more impactful because it built up this sense of uneasy knowledge in me. But I saw it coming.

The only thing I have to say to you is that you're a goddamn guru. I didn't see it coming at all. Those events you said just made me think she was coming back after she had failed to prevent meteor, and subsequently we would have to find another way to do it.

How the hell does seeing her walking through the woods implies death?

She was, like, all ghostly and stuff. Usually when you have visions of a person in situations like that, things are grim?

I suppose through lack of clarity I may be being dishonest here: I went into the game knowing she died. I saw it being foreshadowed in that way. Unfortunately, that was spoiled for me long before I owned a Playstation.

it depends, if people call it the best final fantasy ever , then yes , cause that would be ignoring all the rest (and IMO better games) but if its against modern games then no

Final fantasy 7 is not overated, it is one of the greatest games of all time, none of the other FFs have given me the same feeling after playing it. Aeris death was and still is one of the most emotional moments I have had playing.

Soundtrack is one of the best there is, graphics where great at the time, the inclusion of the cinematics which made you get more emotionaly connected to the characters and story, the characters where great, far more developed than the usual RPG charactewrs( the warrior, the mage, the princess, etc...), villians developed to the the point whre u actually care about them.

Each character was deeply developed, the setting for the story was great( Not like the kingdom or things that had been done so many times before).

Things like the lifestream, the extraction of mako energy, the people at the slums in midgar, made you feel it has to do with the bad treatment we give to the planet, and how are poor people affected by it and corporations gain more power than goverments(Shinra).

All of this, and the fact that there are guys with giant swords that can fight with others with guns, ninjas, sexy girls, badass badguys, an lion that speaks and a guy with a gattlin gun in his arm make this game awesome.

Honestly, I think FFVII would have turned out better if Cloud got gunned down by Shinra instead of Zack. Not sure what they did to him in Crisis Core but the Zack of FFVII wasn't the whiny emo bastard that Cloud was. Hell, he probably would pushed Aerith out of the way instead standing their like a useless tool. Also, I don't think he would have went "Chris Brown" on Aerith at the Temple of the Ancients either. Nothing like an whiny, emo, crying, woman beating lead character to make a game the "greatest" in the series.

Too bad Cloud isn't whiny. Aslo, if Zack was in FFVII as the main character instead of Cloud, you would've have a "ZOMG I'M IN LOVE WITH YOU!" story. Also, Zack did have some moments like Cloud, but their both the same. And the only reason Zack got gunned down was because he fought a squad of low class SOLDIERs.
