Forums - Sales - PS3 exclusive sales... whats the deal?

marketing is a definite thing.

but remember the xbox crowd has always been shooter/RPG heavy.

but the PS crowd has always been diversified as I said in the thread. The PS systems had platformers, racers, JRPG's, some shooters n so on sell very well.

so the PS fans who brought the PS3 have diversified tastes....not tastes focused on say 2 genre's

Now diversification is great if your console sells 100 Million ....you could have say 10 million fans of each genre.

but if your console sells only 20 million.....the diversification is a disadvantage.....as there are less fans of each genre present....which means less sales overall.

if LBP, Resistance n so on were on PS2.....they would be having legs like the the Wii titles right now

This is a serious question and is not trolling.  I just dont understand why the top notch PS3 exclusives dont shift huge numbers.  These are all high qaulity titles and yet they just dont compare in sales.

If we look at arguably the 4 most hyped games (exclusive) of this gen so far with their 1st week (2 weeks for LBP) and LTD sales.

360

Halo 3           3.8m          9.1m      First Person Shooter

Gears            0.6m          5.8m      3rd Person Shooter

Gears2          1.9m          4.6m       3rd Person Shooter

Fable2           1.0m          2.5m      Western RPG

PS3

MGS4             1.7m            3.9m  Stealth / Action / Shooter

Res2              0.23m          1.4m  First person Shooter ( but it's more like a 1st person Alien Shooter)

LBP                0.31m          2.0m   Platform

KZ2                0.8m(?)       3.5m ????  First Person Shooter

Why is this? I can't explain it....

I do not belive that the install base is the issue here (Gears1 for instance launched with a 5m install base I believe) and even if it was factored in the numbers still dont compare.

Someone explain this to me (without resorting to fanboy nonsense from either side).....there is something different in the buying habits of the respective console owners???

The major 360 titles have western apeal 1st Person shooter ,3rd person shooter and western RPG's will sell well because that's the type of americans in particular like and we all know the 360 performs best in america , it also has a strong presense in europe.

The PS3's userbase is more equaly distributed across japan , europe and america so even if they release a game which heavily apeals to the west there's still about 3 million japanese owners who don't want to hear it . Little big plannet is a new franchise in a relativley niche market , Resistance takes the FPS genre in a pretty unique direction . Metal Gear Solid 4 has been the most viable PS3 exclusive because it caters to western and asian audiences ,the userbase in Japan actualy care about the game therfore it sold excellently.

Killzone 2 is relying heavily on Europe and America for the bulk of it's sales as Gears of War 2 and Halo did but alot of the PS3's userbase lies in japan which is an immediate disadvantage for western orientated games.

Also factoring

-The PS3's smaller userbase.

-Sony under-marketing certain exclusives like Resistance 2 , Socom etc.

And you have a strong case for poorer performing exclusives.

The PS3 exclusive games that you listed are not as main stream as the XBox 360 exclusive games you listed.
Halo and Gears are the biggest series on the XBox 360.

BTW: Darth if the op adds in GT5: Prologue he might as well add in Forza 2. Two exclusive racing games head to head. GT 5:P may be graphically superior but Forza 2 has sold more copies than GT 5:P.

@numonex

forza 2 was bundled with every 360 in the US during Xmas 2007.......we have been through this many times on the forum

Also Forza 2 selling more copies than GT5:P (which has also been bundled but nowhere near the same amount) is ok as forza 2 is an actual iteration in the franchise not a payed demo.

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

Resistance sold almost 4 million
games like Tomb Raider DMC 4 sold on ps3 more than xbox

Xbox dont sell Rpgs (hello square enix)

Well, I see three key elements:

1) 360 has a more narrow set of owners demographically, and it has grown on back on Xbox as the console for online shooters/MP in the US. This means that the 360 can shift very high numbers of shooters to a relatively small install base. It also means that there is less risk for MS as a great shooter will always tend to do very well on the console.

2) PS3 has a broader set of owners demographically, and has a relatively weak install base in US, which is the territory which really embraced console shooters. With only relatively few of the former PS2 franchises actually out on the system, and with others going multi-platform, the console simply isn't set up to show massive numbers right now. The PS3 needs a bigger install base and more diverse library to shine, as a price point drop to boot.

3) 360 one year lead and price advantage has enabled the 360 to remain in the better position for key titles, with Sony marketing seeming confused since the console launched. This coupled with the US install base and a strong move in UK and some other territories to 360 vs PC gaming puts the 360 in the better position to post bigger initial sales and bigger overall sales LTD.

Right now I'd say good PS3 titles show better legs, while 360 has better initial sales and has a core set of titles that will always show really big numbers. I'd be willing to bet that the core 360 audience is willing to spend more than the average PS3 owner and is more fanatic about certain 'must have' titles.

Blu-Ray has nothing to do with it, apart from its impact on PS3 price of course IMHO.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

It's the games on the respective consoles, not the userbase

Lets looks at the top selling PS2 games, and look for franchises that have had an exclusive PS3 release

http://vgchartz.com/games/index.php?&results=50&name=&console=PS2&keyword=&publisher=&genre=&order=Sales&boxart=Both&showdeleted=&region=All&alphasort=

GTA - multiplat
GT - not yet released
FF - multiplat, not yet released
Need for Speed - multiplat
MGS2 - the first hit. But MGS4 will probably come close to it in sales, 3.9 and counting as opposed to 5.58
Kingdom Hearts - not announced
Crash Bandicoot - Not big anymore
DQ - no longer on PS
Infact, the next highest selling game to have a PS3 sequel is EyeToy Play

My only conclusion can be this
PS3 exclusives are not selling well because the PS3 has not had many big exclusives, and I'm sorry if that sounds like trolling.

Marketing and as someone else mentioned the 360 is doing best in NA where game purchases are at its highest.

MGS4 sold well full stop, LBP done pretty rubbish numbers looking at the price of the game at least here in the UK however it was a very hard game to sell. Resistance 2 simply did LOL which proves justice exists because that was one awful game.

The demographic for 360 owners is also teens and men whom have hefty disposable income so that could be a reason. PS3 owners are all high class and do not like purchasing objects which cost less than £100 so that could be another reason for the terrible sales.

Firstly LBP sold 490k, as that US 1st week sales is really week 0.

Anyway, with most of those Xbox games, they are big established franchises. Gears is the exception and that had exceptional marketing

The Xbox has a less diverse user base, so obviously, out of those 4 games, 3 are shooters. With the PS3, you chose 2 shooters, though I would have chosen Uncharted instead of Resistance, which though is shootery, is less of a shooter than the rest. Incidentally, that game sold 195k first week, and sold 2m before proper bundling. This shows that a much wider range of games sell on the PS3.

If you look at the top 50 Xbox games, ignoring bundled ones, there are a huge amount of shooters

Anyway, hopefully the PS3 exclusives will sell more, as the biggest guns, GT 5 and FF XIII come out

poor marketing thanks a lot of credit for that
