There is something about the genre, when done right, that makes it deeper, more interesting, more engaging, longer lasting, more emotionally involved, and funner than other genres.
When gaming was invented, the RPG was the most obvious and highest reaching implication.
When done wrong, though, the genre is quite mediocre.
It's fairly obvious, however, that the genre is, and perhaps always shall, be the favorite of the console gamer in general.
Does your character improve in game, have a narrative, fight bosses? Well, you're playing an rpg. Did you really think Bioshock was a FPS? Is Zelda an "action" game? Is SotN a platformer? You are taking on the role of a character, and improving that character in order to reach a resolution. THAT is what single player gaming is all about, and that is why rpgs are the shit.
