In terms of critical acclaim, maybe - but Grand Theft Auto IV probably wins there.

In terms of popularity, no; Wii Sports is. I'd also say Wii Sports is the most important game in terms of shaping this generation. (I don't enjoy it very much, though.)

Going my my own personal preferences, it's not even in the top 10. (Portal and Mass Effect are tied for first.) But then again, I've never been a Mario fan, and I enjoyed Super Mario Galaxy more than any other Mario game - so that says something.

SMG is fine but LBP is my favorite this gen.

Funny thing is, the best game I played this gen is actually from last gen. I didn't have a gamecube so I played fire emblem only now. Wow, that was easily the best game I played this generation.

Depends if I'm allowed to include Zelda: TP. If am then it takes a second. If not then yes Mario Galaxy. Personally, I've yet to play anything this gen that even comes close to Galaxy. Of course I haven't played MGS4 or GTA IV or whatever everyone else is hyping up, but Galaxy was just amazing. Hard to top such a well constructed game. Going simply off of what I know about the developers, though, I'd say MGS4 would make good competition.

There are a couple games that have been more fun for me personally.. but when it comes to innovation nothing comes close. SMG is the best Mario game ever.

Not even Valkyrie Chronicles can, every time I think of going for a 2nd play through or doing 100% I get a bitter feeling... I look forward to a game that brings me back: like Mario Kart, Melee, PSO, F-Zero and Poke mon granted I'm talking about the gb one.
