I can't believe Darth got banned for his comments in this thread. They are not even remotely trollish or offensive. He just put forward a good point and got banned for it. I have seen far worse go unpunished on this site. I'm very disappointed.

Oh no sony defense force is crumbling, who will be next, anyway, i'm not really suprised why he was banned.

I love the shit talking on SO4. Didn't it outsell day 1 of the last game in the series (the PSP one)?

PSP ones were remakes of the 1st and 2nd games that were released on the SNES and PS1.

The last game in the series which is SO3 sold 396,036 accodring to this site in its first week.

you mean the remake? on a handheld... even if it wasnt a remake it would have been spin off and still on a hand held.

Phantasy Star Portable says "Hi"

No idea why I was quoted unless I missed something here. *scratches head*

I was just letting him know that SO4 did not outsell the last game in the series, which was SO3.

You confuse me.

Didn't know it was a remake. However, this is Japan we're talking about it. Being on a handheld, even the PSP, is an advantage if anything.

i have never plsayed SO so i dont know if the stories are tied together for the sequels but i was more getting to the point that if its on a handheld it would be a spinoff

All Star Oceans take place in the same general timeline of events - like Phantasy Star (pre-PSO) did. Star Ocean has never had a spinoff, only remakes.

And for the record on Star Ocean sales:

Star Ocean (SNES):

  • 76,000 - First Week
  • 176,000 - LTD

Star Ocean 2 (PS1):

  • 374,000 - First Week
  • 700,000 - LTD

Star Ocean 3 (PS2):

  • 386,000 - First Week
  • 533,000 - LTD

Star Ocean: First Departure (PSP Remake of SO1)

  • 115,000 - First Week
  • 205,000 - LTD

Star Ocean: Second Story (PSP Remake of SO2)

  • 90,000 - First Week
  • 143,000 - LTD

There are a few ways to look at it. On one hand, it's definately going to underpreform vs. SO3. However, on the other end, the PSP remakes did abysmal, and SO4 on 360 already outsold both PSP remakes' first week numbers in 1 day, and is assured to pass the SO2 remake's LTD numbers in 1 week. So looking at the most recent titles, SO4 did very well on the 360, regardless. It's just when you compare it to SO3, it doesn't look as stellar.

More than likely, I think we'll see a PS3/X360 Director's Cut, since the DC of SO3 did very well. But that's IMO.

And Max, since you have no idea about Star Ocean, I'll give you a hint: The PSP versions are as much Star Ocean as the FFIII and IV remakes on DS are. Take that as you want, but that's the same level they are on. Phantasy Star Portable has been mentioned as well, which is an apt comparason too (and Phantasy Star Portable sold ~700,000 on the PSP).

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

For downplaying the power of handhelds to sell games over consoles. Remakes can sell good while being on a handheld. ¬_¬

So Star Ocean PSP did 'abysmal', and yet it outsold the original game:

Star Ocean (SNES):

* 76,000 - First Week
* 176,000 - LTD

Star Ocean: First Departure (PSP Remake of SO1)

* 115,000 - First Week
* 205,000 - LTD

I didn't start this ridiculous argument (X360 vs. PSP), but anyone who thinks mainline SO game on PSP wouldn't destroy SO4 sales is delusional.

You're off on SO1 by a bit, going by VGChartz anyways.

Your first comment makes me wonder then why in the hell they would re-release the first two on Sony platforms and then only release the follow up title on a platform that has none of the other games and none of the fanbase. Shouldn't they have re-release the first two on XBLA instead?

Makes very little sense to me.
