Forums - Gaming - The Wii generation. History will judge the 3rd parties

this is nintendos fault. instead of building 1 multiplat game, because the systems are similar, it now requires one game for the 360/ps3 and one for the wii. thats additional time and money that could be spent making 1 good game for everyone....but no...everyone suffers now. thanks a lot nintendo.

The Wii has some definite potential for development, but quite frankly the effort/desire just isn't there. It requires a totally different approach to making the controls worthwhile.

But honestly, the games for the Wii as a whole are just bleh and even the 'good' ones don't really stand head and shoulders above versions of the Gamecube ones. (Super Smash Bros I'm talking to you).

This generation will go down as the generation of the Multi-Platform. Where development costs became so high, that much of what drove the success of previous generations (Exclusives for PS2 for example) became the undoing of a monster player and leveled the playing field.

The Wii just won't get many quality games IMHO. There is too much time and money to sunk into PS3/360 games that there is little time for Wii games. Additionally, there is more money to be made on 360/PS3 with DLC.

They can keep pushing out essentially shovelware for the Wii and much of the 'casual' ownership of the Wii will gobble it up regardless with minimal effort.

@Johnny Style: This "TM" thingy doesn't work. I only get quotations when I hold and press the 2 key.

Werid, Alt/Option + 2 is giving me ™. Maybe it's because I'm a Mac Laptop and it doesn't use a numpad. What are you using?

Third parties are using the strategy you speak of since years and they are all doing better than ever. So I guess you are right when you say that they can keep using this strategy.

Honestly this has been my biggest gripe with Nintendo for years now. Loved NES, Loved SNES, I loved my N64, really didn't like the Gamecube (Although some games were really pleasant surprises Metroid/Pikmin), really don't like the Wii.

But Nintendo just seemingly doesn't have many 'good' games anymore.  They are few and far between.  When you factor in the usual lag in the graphics department, the usually weaker lineup in games IMHO.  I've just lost faith.  It's almost like developers don't want to bother with Nintendo products.

Hopefully success with the Wii would catapult them into creating a system comparable with Xbox/PS3 in terms of features (Which might actually interest developers more but unfortunately I think that ship has sailed. )  If my pulse on Nintendo is correct,  they will make essentially a Wii Part II with a modest graphics upgrade and pretty much an identical setup as now.   Which quite frankly just disappoints me.

I would have done that from the start if I knew how to type that "TM" thingy.

Windows: Hold Alt + type 0153 on Numpad

Mac: Hold Alt + 2 Key

Huh. I learn something new everyday.™ Thanks BrainBox! I've been wanting to learn that for a while.

Heh. Beating up on strawmen looks like fun! Let me have a turn now. *Ahem.*

"This is the only generation where people bought a console not because the games were fun, but because the visuals were so pretty. They then spent half the generation whining when the majority of people rejected their narrow tastes and values.......(and complaining that not every game is in 1080p).

"It makes PERFECT sense. Every time something shows that most folks who aren't 16-25 year old boys (and millions who are) prefer substance over style, they then ask "Why are people buying a console without any games?!"

"IF YOU WANTED TO UNDERSTAND WHY MOST PEOPLE DON'T GIVE A FLYING FLIP ABOUT WHAT YOU THINK IS FUN, WHY DON'T YOU STOP HAVING THE EGOCENTRISM OF A CHILD AND START THINKING LIKE A RATIONAL ADULT?"

.....well. That wasn't very fun. Since I don't see why you enjoy acting like you do, I'm going to assume you're stupid. Also, rather than pay attention to anything you actually say and do, I'm going to put on my Tunnel Vision Goggles, and only acknowledge things that enforce my point of view, so don't bother pointing out the numerous things in the above three paragraphs that are incorrect.

Excluding you're tirade of complete fail.....really, answer the question. If you wanted games the like of Street Fighter IV, or Final Fantasy XIII, or Tekken (you may not like those specific games, but you catch my drift), why did you buy a Wii, knowing they wouldn't be on there? Don't sit there and complain at the HD consoles because they have them, but you didn't buy the appropriate console. Because you want these games, yet still bought the Wii, that just reassures the whole "The Wii wins despite not having the games". I don't care about your whole speel about "people are ignoring my narrow tastes". If you wanted GTA, if you wanted MGS4, if you wanted FFXIII, if you wanted COD4, if you wanted Burnout, if you wanted Star Ocean, if you wanted DMC4, etc, you should've bought one of the HD consoles.Don't complain to the 3rd parties. Trade that Wii in and buy the console that has the games....not buy the console that DOESN'T have the games, then complain since they aren't on there

Love that thing so much! Can you pass on any others, BrainBox? Or at least point me to where I can discover more?

For windows you can use this site for Alt codes.

For Mac, don't know, I just held Alt and tried to remember an alt code and found out it was Alt 2. Think Alt + Any Key gets you some symbol, least on the computer I'm using. Alt + 5 is ®. Alt + = is ≠. Alt + G is ©.

The way I see it is that for most 3rd party publishers the PS3/360 combo is effectively a single platform that they can develop the same game for thus most games that are multi-platform are on those 2 consoles.

The HD consoles are similar in terms of performance and controls so consequently it makes sense for most 3rd parties to take this approach. It is very telling to note for example that while the latest iteration of call of duty has sold millions on the 360 and PS3 it is still shy of a million on a console with an install base nearing 50 million.

With the possible exceptions of a couple of publishers like Sega and Capcom not many 3rd parties are having success on the console. It may be argued that they haven't invested enough money and effort into the wii but the fact remains that it remains far more attractive to develop multi platform games for the PS3/360 than it is for the wii at this time.

Third parties may well support the wii more in the future but as long as the HD consoles are a viable alternative it would seem that the 3rd parties will remain content with the status quo IMHO.

And apparently, even afterwards! It's nice that, for once, stockholders suffer to benefit consumers.
