Forums - Gaming - If you haven't given Mirror's Edge a chance try it, its friggin awesome

I was somewhat interested in Mirror's Edge on its console release, but quite frankly it was sandwiched with a dozen big releases that were more sure things and it kind of fell through the cracks.  It looked interesting but I just didn't take the plunge.

So I decided to build a PC with a 295 Nvidia card, a 2.93 i7 Processor, 12 gigs of RAM, the works and was looking for games to play that took advantage and were not called Crysis.  I saw a Mirror's Edge PC review on IGN that implored gamers "not to miss out on this gem again" and the graphics looked great so I tried it.

I have to say I have had not had a more fun, more fluid experience in years.  OK not the entire game, it has some decent but not great combat and a few tomb raider like sections where you have to figure out where to go next (wall jump to the grate and then climb to the next platform hidden behind the tarp) indoors.  Those are present a bit too much for my taste but are primarily an annoyance because they are not the truly awesome rooftop free running portions of the game.  When jumping from rooftop to rooftop fluidly sliding under radiators, leaping across buildings and dodging bullets from a perusing helicopter in what has to be the most beautiful PC game I have ever seen its just...sublime.  The mouse and keyboard work very well once you get used to it and without a doubt the best parts of mirrors edge are the best parts of any game I've played in years.  Yes sometimes you get stuck looking for a vent or bogged down in combat so Mirror's edge is not necessarily the best game of the last few years, but when its on it's REALLY on.

So for any of you PC gamers (or even consolers) looking for something to play I recommend Mirror's Edge and then some.  It really is the most interesting original game I've played in a very long time and without a doubt worth your time and 40 bucks.

I thought it was pretty good, but if you're not going to play a lot of the Race mode I'd recommend it only as a rental considering how short the story was.

"Now, a fun game should always be easy to understand - you should be able to take one look at it and know what you have to do straight away. It should be so well constructed that you can tell at a glance what your goal is and, even if you don’t succeed, you’ll blame yourself rather than the game. Moreover, the people standing around watching the game have also got to be able to enjoy it." - Shiggy

I tried the demo, and hated it. There was bloom everywhere, so I couldn't see anything, it was extremely disorienting, the story didn't appear to make any sense, and it just generally seemed pretty awful.

If you played it on the 360 or PS3 (which I did try) it is FAR better on the PC.  The bloom is gone (because the graphics card can actually handle and store real time processing of distant effects because unlike the PS3 and 360 its not limited to less then 1GB or RAM) don't judge the PC version with that brush.  Like with most games, if you have a decent or better PC that version is leaps and bounds better then the console version (was equally true for Fallout 3 recently).

As to the length, yes it is around 6-8 hours but its not like "long" action games are much longer.  The single player in Gears of War is what? 7 hours?  Ditto for almost all single player action games that don't try to inflate with meaningless explore for the hidden X additions.

There are actually really fun unlockable courses in race mode, and race mode emphasizes the best running on rooftops parts of the game.  It is a VERY worthy addition and its really fun to work on your reaction time to the point where you can get 2 stars on the rooftop sections.  It really is an acquired skill controlling faith well enough and the game rewards mastering fluidity which is very rare in games which are almost all stop and go (run for 10 feet, then sit behind a wall for 4 minutes in a cover fight, then do that again).

The story does make more sense if you play the actual game, but overall it boils down to there is a conspiracy, you've been framed for a crime and the cops are after you in force which is a pretty good set up for the pursuits and chase sequences to come.  I don't need to know why the cops are after me in Need for Speed Hot Pursuit, its just fun that they're after me.

You better just play the demo three or four times and make your own cinematics with paper cut outs - The Escapist.

^Agreed.

I have really enjoyed what I have played of it, though I need to wait for my brother to finish it before I can complete the story

One of the best games i've played of 2008 (or well actually 2009 since it came out on pc then)

Really innovative and awesome game design!

This would never run on my laptop so I am waiting for the price of the console versions to come down. I want to play this game but with so many games I want to grab at the moment I am at a point where I need to be picky.

I loved the demo though, played through it at least 6 times.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Got a retro room? Post it here!

I could buy it if it's released as a platinum game, but I'd never pay 65€ for a game that last 5 hours.

I'll say it's worth your time, but not worth you money. Just keep playing the demo and keep thinking it's a cool game, cause you'll be disappointed when you buy it.
