I tried the demo, and hated it. There was bloom everywhere, so I couldn't see anything, it was extremely disorienting, the story didn't appear to make any sense, and it just generally seemed pretty awful.

If you played it on the 360 or PS3 (which I did try) it is FAR better on the PC.  The bloom is gone (because the graphics card can actually handle and store real time processing of distant effects because unlike the PS3 and 360 its not limited to less then 1GB or RAM) don't judge the PC version with that brush.  Like with most games, if you have a decent or better PC that version is leaps and bounds better then the console version (was equally true for Fallout 3 recently).

As to the length, yes it is around 6-8 hours but its not like "long" action games are much longer.  The single player in Gears of War is what? 7 hours?  Ditto for almost all single player action games that don't try to inflate with meaningless explore for the hidden X additions.

There are actually really fun unlockable courses in race mode, and race mode emphasizes the best running on rooftops parts of the game.  It is a VERY worthy addition and its really fun to work on your reaction time to the point where you can get 2 stars on the rooftop sections.  It really is an acquired skill controlling faith well enough and the game rewards mastering fluidity which is very rare in games which are almost all stop and go (run for 10 feet, then sit behind a wall for 4 minutes in a cover fight, then do that again).

The story does make more sense if you play the actual game, but overall it boils down to there is a conspiracy, you've been framed for a crime and the cops are after you in force which is a pretty good set up for the pursuits and chase sequences to come.  I don't need to know why the cops are after me in Need for Speed Hot Pursuit, its just fun that they're after me.
