Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Is Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Overrated?

ahh, geeze...here we go again.  Do I think OoT is overrated?  No.  It was a major milestone in the gaming world and made a huge impact.  Was it the best Zelda ever?  That's infinitely harder to say.  I love all the Zelda games, as they each offer an incredible adventure.  I firmly believe anyone who tries to talk the talk and dismiss Zelda as one of the greatest experiences in gaming history, is seriously torqueing it and doesn't deserve to hold a controller in their hands.

Damn it, now I'm going to have to plug in the N64 and replay the whole OoT (or the GC master quest, dear lord) and Majora's Mask to make a decision.

My thought is that yes, MM is way underrated under the shadow that OoT cast.  I think that MM was more difficult, and perhaps that didn't help its cause for those other than the (dare I even say it?) "hardcore".  =p

Yes.

It is hailed as the best Zelda of all time. Yet it is objectively inferior to Link to the Past and Majora's Mask. So there.

*sticking tongue out*

OoT was more 'new' to gaming than MM was.

(I prefer MM to OoT, but.. Credit where credit is due)

Pish-posh and poppycock, my good man!

Ocarina may have established the 3D adventure game as we know it, but Majora's is the first game I know of where there's (the illusion) of an independent living world going on around you 24/7. Or at least 24/3. What other game is there where each NPC has his or her own life, a life which goes on whether you so much as meet that person or not? Majora's characters weren't mere props, waiting around lifelessly to be used by the player to activate or advance quests. Lots of them felt like actual individuals, who were trying to improve their lives whether you helped or not.

For example, suppose you never do the Kafei/Anju quest. In most games, the two would simply mope around, bored, until you got around to them, at which point they'd do their pre-scripted routine, politely pausing their affairs when it was convenient for you to do so. By contrast, Majora's has them acting and reacting to their situation. If you never so much as talk to them, they still play out their plotline (albeit in such a way that ends in failure). If you initiate their plot, but drop out at any of several points, they make their decisions and try to soldier on without you (albeit in such a way that ends in failure). And if you carry through to the end, they get their happy ending. But the point is that in their quest, as in Majora's as a whole, life always goes on, whether you participate or not.

Sorry for the mini-essay. I'm just still blown away by the ambition and accomplishment of that game, and disappointed that no one's really followed through since then.

seconded.  Majora's Mask is the second best zelda post-OoT, ONLY because OoT was the pioneer.  If they came out the same time, Majora's Mask would be 1

Fact: Earthbound is the greatest game ever made

I'm going to have to say no.

Yes it is overrated, only cause I think "A Link to the Past" is the best Zelda game, with that said OoT is still a good game.

I'm taking this into my personal sig.

No love for Tetris?

To answer the OP: No. Ocarina of Time is not overrated. I don't personally like it as much as many others do, but I can comprehend what it meant for gaming in general and what it brought to the table.

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

Tetris was not made in the last 20 years.  Though I still don't quite agree that OoT is the only masterpiece in the last 20 years. I do however agree that it IS a masterpiece(even by today's standards); therefore, no I don't think it is overrated.

The definitive version of Tetris, the original Gameboy version came out in 1989, which is the version that people consider the true masterpiece. It's just hard for me to show that since all of the Tetris games back in the days had no subnames. They were all called Tetris.
