Forums - Sony - Sixaxis a mistake?

I've yet to play a game that the sixaxis was used in a good way, its just not good and I think it was a mistake from Sony. They knew the technology was promising but couldn't do it properly. While Nintendo did a home-run with the wii, they implemented the technology perfectly.

My favorite games for this gen:

1. Gears of War    2. MGS4    3. Killzone 2   4. Halo 3(Underated by many)      5. Mass Effect

I think there are games that use it right.  As said previously, it should not be the main control mechanism for any game mechanic, but it can add to the overall experience.  I think Siren is a good example of a game where you need to shake the PS3 controller when someone grabs you to break free, this is much better than the typical "flick the left analog stick back and forth" that you are typically faced with.  Killzone 2 uses the sixaxis to turn valves, which is an improvement over the hit B to engage and repeatedly hit x to turn the valve that Gears uses.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

Then go play one of the many and get back to us.

First re-read this thread. Second, slap yourself. Nintendo didn't implement it perfectly. Why else would they bring out motion plus ? they couldn't be arsed to do a proper motion control device. IE what they should do with the type of motion control they have, instead the opted for a half arsed solution.

I know in Lair The motion controls work better than using the analogue, the main problem was the gestures for do a 180 and thrust forward were often confused by the motion detection, causing the opposite effect of what you wanted - because to thrust the controller forward you might pull it back to be able to do that and get the wrong thing read, and vice verse. The problem with motion controls is that it requires you to 'sit-up' to play and i don't always want to do that.

Also, I'm surprised no one seems to have mentioned the Bowling game on PSN, that game is all about its six-axis controls, it's a lot like a wii game.

Folklore was done well. If sixaxis was a mistake, it all depends on what it cost to implement, like someone mentioned, if it was very cheap then it only adds to the experience, it doesn't take away.

It was paid off in six figures long time ago pal.

Anyone who thinks the six axis was a last miniute addon is mistaken. It may not be the primary focus of the console, However changing the console itself to support motion controls isnt an over night kind of thing. I believe sony had the idea from the start.

Yep. They patented motion controls way back. People who really thought they put the sixaxis together in 1 day are truly ignorant. Nintendo were simply lucky to be the first ones spilling the beans on their version of it.

I bet you someone from sony and nintendo got together for lunch, the sony dude said they would have motion controlls to rub it in the face of the nintendo dude, and then the nintendo dude goes back and they revamp everything XD

Also the six axis is better then the Wiimote. I shall explain.

1 its 60 dollars not 80
2 its more exact and doesnt require as much force as the wiimote
3 its more comfy. I cant hit the 1 and 2 buttons on the wiimote
4 the wiimote has only 1 stick :P

Also if everyone hasnt seen this Sony upgrades their controllers every gen, as well as their discs.

PS1 gave us sticks and CDs(not the first but meh)
PS2 gave us a more refined controllers and the first DVD console
PS3 gives us sixaxis and even more refined controls, oh and blu-ray.
