Forums - Sales - The year so far..... how long can Sony stand this?

YESSSS!! I GET TO TALK ABOUT THE WORLD ECONOMY AGAIN! THANK YOU FOR THIS THREAD!!!

Actually though I will only talk about Japans today...

According to the BBC..and CBC, Japan's markets are at the worst in 35 year, when the Gas prices exploded...This is only bad for Sony, no investors no new money..

ALso if you look atSony's products, it dose have the line up of 10 years ago, No Walkman, their new TV's are not as good as the compition...for a luxary brand they have ALMOST no top line products.

IF Sony Survies the next 2-3 years then the PS3 will be all right...but I think thats an IF.

Compared to last year...

2008 week ending 5th Jan to week ending 9th Feb

Wii  1,909,368          47.4%

PS3  1,256,497         31.3%

360   854,869           21.3%

Total  4,020,734

2009 week ending 3rd Jan to week ending 7th Feb

Wii  2,733,445          52.8%    (up 824,077 or 43.2% on 2008)

PS3  1,051,797          20.3%    (down 204,700 or 16.3% on 2008)

360  1,395,980          26.9%    (up 541,111 or 63.3% on 2008)

Total  5,181,222        up 28.9%

So in a rising market the Wii is taking off, the 360 is follwing that market and the PS3 is falling hard...  if this was extrapolated over the whole year it would be very ugly for Sony...

Solutions? Well.... obviously the only one that will turn this is a price cut?

But is it too late? Are the buying habits of this gen set?

Thoughts??

Sony needs to add price cuts around the time of sales boosts (3rd & 4th quarter). The 1st and 2nd quarter should go properly for Sony because of great anticipation for Killzone 2, InFamous and a couple other expected games. Really and truly if you want my opinion, wait to spell out Sony's fate for 2009 after E3. This one will be the last and I believe that they will go out with a bang.

hey sony must be happy since they are still hitting their targets for ps3. they are in it for the long run so whats the rush? because the ps3 is still so expensive it will sell for a very long time and it hasnt even come anywhere near its peak yet. the 360 is already losing its steam and its the cheapest console out there. soon it will be cheaper than the ps2.

true, xbox 360 can outsell ps3 all year long but if sony came out with a big worldwide price cut right at the end of the year like say in november, they will easily make up all the lost sales and eventually start closing the gap again..... until microsoft cut the 360 price to $50.

I believe Sony's biggest concern should be the loss of 3rd party support.

THERES NO EVIDENCE OF LOSS OF 3RD PARTY SUPPORT. EVEN AT CURRENT SALES 20MILLION BASE, NOBODY WILL DROP SUPPORT, SONY GAINING A 3RD PARTY EXCLUSIVE OR MICROSOFT GAINING A 3RD PARTY EXCUSIVE DOESNT MEAN A GAME DROP FOR THE OTHER CONSOLE.

HD games take something between 3-5 years to develop, correct? So, the games we are seeing being release now or in the near future, had their development started back in 2006. Now, let's look at the reality in 2006 where the decisions to create today's games were made, who would predict that Wii would capture virtually 50% of the market, followed by the 360 and with the PS3 struggling in 3rd. Nobody. People thought only the 360 and PS3 were worth the development costs and so, they decided to develop for them.

EVEN THOUGH PS3 IS 3RD HAVE YOU GLANCED AT PS3 SALES ON RECENT 3RD PARTY TITLES LIKE FALLOUT COD5 ETC, WHO IN THE HELL WOULD DROP THAT SALES GAIN ON THIER TITLES.

Now, let's see today: The Wii is the big winner and ignoring it means ignoring 50% of the install base. EA already woke up to this, others will follow. The 360 is maintaining it's position and the PS3 is losing market share. That is the problem: losing market share and with no signs of turning the situation around and it is also clear that any price cut by Sony can be answered immediatly by MS with a price cut since they can afford it.

WII ISNT THE BIG WINNER IN CORE GAMING, TITLES LIKE FIFA, FALLOUT COD GTA5 ETC WOULD NOT WORK WELL ON WII. WII HAS PUSHED FORWARD CHILD/MINI GAME/CASUAL AND PARLOUR GAMES AND OF COURSE THIER MAIN NINTENDO GAMES, THATS WHATS MADE THEM THE WINNER. IN CORE GAMING IM AFRAID IM STAYING AWAY FROM WII BECAUSE IT DOESNT OFFER IT. AND EVEN IF IT DID LIKE NEW PORTS OF DEAD SPACE, ID RATHER HAVE THE HD VERSIONS.

The future does not look too good for Sony and even if they can turn this around, will 3rd party developers bet their companies' future on this? I doubt it. So, the consequences of today's situation will be felt by 2011, when the 10 years plan will hit the problem of fewer games to fuel sales.

AGAIN LOOK AT 3RD PARTY SALES ON PS3, WHO IS GOING TO DROP THAT SALES GAIN. NOBODY WILL

...not much time to post anymore, used to be awesome on here really good fond memories from VGchartz...

PSN: Skeeuk - XBL: SkeeUK - PC: Skeeuk

really miss the VGCHARTZ of 2008 - 2013...

Sony is selling a lot of PS3, a lot of PSP, and even still PS2.

It's not because it doesn't beat the wii or the 360 lately that they aren't doing good.

But if we only talk about the HD fight, Sony still can do a lot of price cuts that will turn the numbers around. Check last year's threads if you want to be sure.

The problem with Ratz comments are he is only talking about big IP's, yes the may stay on the PS3 but it will be the new IP's from the smaller game companies that will not be PS3. These will be the ones that start to drop off. Sony really are in a hard place at the moment and if you look around the internet at all the different forums there is a real dislike for Sony ( not on sites like this and other pro Sony sites). People can't see real games and lets be honest KZ2, GOW III etc are harcore games and that market already have both consoles, its the Wii gamer MS and Sony need and MS is getting there but Sony are 2 years behind.

Sony must simply delay price cuts as much as possible, supporting sales with these big games releases and attractive bundles in the meantime. If not enough, they could do a small cut in April and a bigger one at the end of October for a total of $100, maybe it could be a little less effective than a single $100 cut, but it would make more difficult for MS to counter them both without hurting itself.
