Forums - Sales - Can 500 million consoles be sold this gen?

Right now, according to shipment figures from the end of the last quarter, consoles have sold up to 242.01 million units and have been four years since the very first console stepped in (the Nintendo DS). That means we are - at the worst scenario - two quarters away from reaching last gen shipment figures to date (which I estimate to be around 270 million).

Considering next gen start on the end of 2010 for portables, and end of 2011-2012 for consoles, my estimated lifetime sales figures are around:

Wii - 155 million

PS3 - 50 million

X360 - 55 million

DS - 155 million

PSP - 85 million

Considering them to be very reasonable predictions, is well possible that consoles finally hit the benchmark of half a million consoles. Is also worthy to note non-Nintendo consoles have a shot at outselling their last gen counterparts, even if only by a small margin.

What do you think?

If you include portables then yes, otherwise not even close. I would say 300 million is the max for console sales, not including portables of course.

for consoles I guess your numbers are possible.... for portables I think it'll be a bit hard

I'd say it'll be more like

Wii 150M

PS3 40M

360 50M

DS 140M

PSP 60M

total 440M

I mainly predict lower for all but especially for PS3 and PSP... based on the fact that I think PSP is at the end of it's life and PS3 has still 2 years of ok sales but not much more...

So you think Sony will ship 9 million extra PSPs and cut a sucessful console not even five years from its launch?

PS3 and X360 way to low

Wii: 150 million

PS3: 75 million

X360: 65 million

DS: 150 million

PSP: 85 million

Total: 525 million so yup!

Not including portables, no. Including portables, I would assume so.

Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

If portables are included then hell yea, there's a possibility that it can happen.
