Forums - Microsoft - Is It Time For MS To Eat Crow....

That would be stupid. the 360 is a console, not a dvd/blu ray player. If you wanna buy blu ray, get a blu ray player.

Yes I know what you are saying, problem is I dont want another player jamming up my already cluttered space.

I have a surround system that has a dvd player with it plus 360 plus pc tower.

A sweet little add on would be nice.

@ perpride

I agree with what you say.

I completely agree with the OP. "Streaming media" is like a fucking joke compared to a Blu Ray Add-On and whoever in here is actually in support of it has seriously bought into MS's bullshit.

Incorrect! I hate MS. However, if I have to pick between HD disc format or being able to stream anything I want to my 360 - which CAN be free - I'm going to pick streaming any time. I have every episode of Star Trek (TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, and ENT), Stargate (SG-1 and Atlantis), Quantum Leap, Frasier, Dexter, Cheers, Doctor Who, and a lot more - all available on my HDD to stream directly to my 360. It's wonderful to have. Granted, they're not all legal (although some are), but I don't have to fiddle with changing discs at all, and trust me - that IS a great thing to have.

BR is the new betamax

I have been saying this exact same thing for months on here and get yelled at for it. Watch out!

Some of you guys downtalking BR at all costs seem to live in their own small bubble, or to be in utter denial.

1) streaming content is nice and everything. But when will everyone who want to see a movie have a steadily reliable 30-40 Mps connection (that's the bandwidth of a BR during playback)? And you have to have this connection _wherever_ and anytime you want to see the content. Want to see a movie while commuting on a portable reader? Want to entertain kids with their favourite Pixar movie during a car travel? Want to bring a few movies at a friend's in the middle of nowhere? Is streaming the answer in these cases? I think you need a physical digital medium.

The average Blu-Ray drive can transfer data off the disk at a rate of 4-6MB/s (36-48Mb/s).  I assume you were meaning megabits and not bytes.  Just thought I'd clarify.

@nightsurge

Yeah, lost a 'b' there. It was meant to be 30-40 Mb per second, of course.

Downloads will not take off for atleast another 5 years. Most people's internets are not nearly as fast to make it practical.

That 'streaming and downloads' bull is just MS trying to hide the fact they lost the format war.

That part is completely true, but there is one more reason i think digital distribution is far from now, and that is game exchange, i have no idea why this is never metioned, if i download a game i cant lend it or exchange it, that is very important for people i know, but i guess that in US everyone  pays for a rented game rather than ask for a friend to lend it.

Blu-ray is the last thing people think of in a recession going on a depression. Dvd upscale is good enough for 99.9 of people

The best comment for the current situation, indeed.

not really, entertainment is paramount for an escape from an individual's struggles.  You need the best, not just good enough. For only 75-100 dollars more you get a blu-ray player.

When it's a recession, going on depression, you'll settle for good enough. Also, it's not $75-$100 more, because everyone already has DVD players. it's whatever the full cost of a player is... and unless someone has a nice HD-TV, it's not worth it.

A Blu-Ray add-on for the 360 would be pointless at this time. Blu-Ray players are getting cheaper. Why buy a $150 add on when you can soon get a standalone player for the same price?

This would hurt MS in peoples mind a well: The 360's Blu-ray player is $150 extra, while the PS3's is already included!

^^
Very good argument, we overlooked it, an add-on would only have the effect to stress the fact that in PS3 it's included. Then people could more likely make the same consideration about HDD included or not in entry level models. And talking with friends and resellers, more likely know before buying that if they want downloadable contents they need a HDD, so for consoles that don't include one they must take it into account to get the total price. This makes me think that there must be a lot of XB360 users (and gaming journalists too) not interested at all in downloadable contents, otherwise MS couldn't have got away so easily with diskless entry level models.

Too late for MS to put in a BR into the 360 it would upset/ alienate its existing 360 owners. Never upset existing customers. MS have done brilliantly to rectify the RROD issue by giving all 360 owners a free three year hardware warranty.

BR may be put into the next XBox but I believe MS will introduce a different format in 4 years time that would be superior than BR.

In 4 years time BR could be like DVD of today and be superseded with better technology.
