Forums - Sales - When will the PS3 pass the 360 in monthly sales in the USA?

Obviously July had the best chance as it had vgchartz and all the analysis suggesting it would though I saw The Source had the 360 ahead in a thread yesterday or the day before that so very nice job there. Obviously the 360 should ALWAYS have the price advantage and as long as there is software being developed I just don't see it ever happening even with big titles like mgs and final fantasy I can see other good 360 titles coming out those same months and again with the lower price always pulling the 360 ahead. The worst that could happen is maybe 1 month or two the ps3 might outsell it due to the previously mentioned software but I think it would be similar to how the xbox might have outsold the ps2 when halo was release but it didn't maintain any momentum.

Sometime in 2008 ..... I think.

if it didn't happen in July it isn't gonna happen this year. Maybe it'll happen early next year if killzone comes out then but if it's around the same time as gta4 maybe not. Possibly the next time PS3 gets a price drop although 360 may also get one then too.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

To tell you the truth I just see the gap slowly getting bigger and bigger. July's NPD shows what a price cut did for Sony and it appears it wasn't enough. Remember, in July the PS3 got the $100 price *and* you couldn't go a day without hearing about a RRoD (not sure why there were so many RRoD stories last month) yet the 360 still managed to come out on top.

At the moment the PS3's heavy hitters appear to swinging a little short (not saying they're bad but not the OMG awesome we had hoped) and the 360 just got done with Bioshock and a price drop, Halo 3 is around the corner, and then it's riding holiday highs until Mass Effect is released and there should be another small surge. I just can't see the PS3 gaining any ground for the rest of the year and I see the gap being too big in 2008. After that, the PS3 will have some incredible titles but the damage will already be done.

The system won't fail, far from it, it just won't be the best or even #2.

In America, and maybe some places in Europe - not so sure about worldwide. That still makes the 360 a very viable console, though, undermining any exclusivity deals going both ways.

Reality has a Nintendo bias.

I honestly don't see the PS3 passing the 360 in America this year, barring any unexpected price-cut or something similar.
However, next year I can definitely see the PS3 to start passing the 360 on a monthly basis, and early on. With MGS4 coming out around March, Killzone 2 presumably around the same time, and GT5, possibly FFXIII late in the year.

Agreed, and now microsoft is now adressing those rrodd issues and once there fixed im sure some people will buy xbox because of it, ps3 i dont see it ever overtaking american untill it actually gets good games out and really lowers the price, and even then i dont see it till 2009/10 at the earliest unless something big happens in 08

Its going to be alot harder for sony to become big this generation, right now they just need to overcome microsoft, and at the current rate, its not going to happen

With regard to Call of Duty 4 having an ultra short single player campaign, I guess it may well have been due to the size limitations of DVD on the XBox 360, one of various limitations multi-platform game designers will have to take into consideration-Mike B

Game trailers-Halo 3 only dissapointed the people who wanted to be dissapointed.

Bet with Harvey Birdman that Lost Odyssey will sell more then Blue dragon did.

There's no telling.

Just on a practical basis, it wont be until sometime in 2008 now.

I think if PS3 notches a couple more big $100 price drops to 399, while microsoft keeps their price stagnant, something like that.

Shit just imagine, if PS3 was to drop another $100, the Elite would actually be more expensive than PS3. I cant imagine MS would allow that to happen.

I think PS3 price cuts will happen faster than people think. You must remember Blu Ray is not a normal component costwise, it's cost will drop (from very high) much faster than a normal component as economies of scale kick in.

Personally I dont think lifetime that the PS3 will outsell the 360 in America.

It's funny how people can just assume that dropping the price is that easy.  The PS3 isn't getting another price drop anytime soon.  They may come out with new models and drop the older models to the low price of $499 but the PS3 isn't going below that anytime soon at all.
