I use Standard 1 with Zoom Toggle. If you haven't tried it yet, try it. It's way better than Alternate 2, because it's what the game has been designed around.
@NNN: Yes, I have played Halo 3. The controls sucked. Okay, that's harsh. But there were no iron sights of any kind, or any zoom mode other than on the rifles. CoD4's controls were infinitely better. |
I like you Kantor. And your opinion is good, so I'm not saying your opinion is rubbish. Mine just differs. Personally Halo 3 was miles better than COD 4. In fact COD 4 is overated for me. Terrible spawning enemies in Singleplayer veteran makes not a war feeling but a bad game engine.
Control wise Bungie have perfected it for me, not only is the FPS stuff spot on. But no other FPS does vehicle controls like Bungie. Hopping from warthog to foot, and back to warthog is seamless. I think it's the best all round controls Ive used.

Don't get me wrong, I've enjoyed Halo 3. It's a very good game. My opinion on Halo 3 is similar to yours on Killzone 2: very good, a tad overhyped. The controls weren't bad as such, but the 30 foot jump was a little gamebreaking, the melee was way overpowered, and why the hell aren't there any iron sights?
Halo 1 ranks as my favourite standard FPS of all time, Halo 2 right behind it. Bungie just messed up a little with Halo 3. They made the campaign way shorter, added no new weapons other than the Spartan Laser and Gravity Hammer, both of which are too crap to use anyway, and put in an unnecessary powerup system.
Then, CoD4 came along. It felt fresh. The controls were the best I had ever seen in a console FPS. The online was fantastic (I've never played Halo online, though, so I can't compare). The campaign was a little short, but it was quality, even if the story was a little all over the place. The controls felt more polished, and yes, there were iron sights. Last Stand was also a great addition.
Killzone 2 is similar. The control scheme is not identical, but it does take some of the better points from the CoD4 controls. L3 to sprint is great, much better than X (I'm looking at you, RE5). R1 to fire was always standard, although some developers (unsuccessfully) tried R2. I believe jump in CoD4 was the same as Halo/KZ. Cooking grenades is there (unlike Halo), and I prefer the way the grenade arc appears as a yellow line. Triangle works for switching weapons, I think that's what it was in Halo as well.
Basically, all three control schemes are similar, although CoD4 and KZ2 more so than CoD4 and Halo 3 or KZ2 and Halo 3. I don't understand the complaints about "dead zone", I never noticed anything like that, even with the amount I've played CoD4. Never noticed any command lag either, like I said in another thread, BioShock's was much worse. As long as you're not too used to another shooter, you'll pick up the controls on your first playthrough. For some people, it would take three or so.
My advice to you, Selnor, next time you get to play, put it on Standard 1, Zoom Toggle, Full sensitivity, and just give it a few playthroughs. Get the feel of it, and you'll be headshotting Helghast like you headshot Grunts.
