Forums - Nintendo - A Wii game with a powerful narrative - suggestions?

Puffy

Your friend want something 'related/similar-ish' to longest journey and dreamfall. He wants a deep progressive story like in hl2. Here is what you do. Recommend him the Wii/GameCube game REmake (the glorious Resident Evil remake from 2002).
It is prerendered and the Gfx are good enough for this generation! I have been playing videogames since the Atari 2600 and I have to say this. REmake is in my "21st century Top 5"! It's that good!
REmake has some serious Quality Gameplay! (also it's scary!)
If he can't get hold of the rerelease version on Wii, then tell him to pick up the almost identical GC version.

Powerful Narrative indeed!

also which Fire Emblem is best?

Fire Emblem (7) Blazing Sword for the GBA has the most interesting lord (main) characters and the first 10 chapters are really geared toward teaching someone how to play the game so it's great for people looking to get interested in the series.

Fire Emblem (8) Sacred Stones for the GBA has the most freedom in character development as far as class promotion and features the ability to fight random encounters which can (potentially) make the game very easy yet satisfying.

Fire Emblem (10) Radiant Dawn for the Wii features the best visuals of the Fire Emblem series.  While it's much more streamlined in terms of promotion and character upgrading than the aforementioned two, it's a bit more challenging as well.

It goes without saying that all Fire Emblem games have nice stories and are great games IMO.

If your friend decides to try Fire Emblem (10) Radiant Dawn for the Wii as his first Fire Emblem game, I strongly recommend starting on the lowest difficulty level.

The suggestions in this thread speak of a lack of understanding for great narrative and a lack of knowledge of good storytelling.

Some of the examples in this thread include MP3, Mario RPG, Re4 and there are others. The keyword in the thread title is "powerful narrative". Does anyone here truly believe the games listed above compare with even the AVERAGE (not even the high echelon) novel or film in terms of narrative???

They do not. The storytelling in any of the above games is a landslide away from what would be considered a decent narrative in any other media, heck, even comic books.

It frightens me to see people naming these games under a banner of narrative excellence.

Granted both the Xbox and Ps3 library are largely comprised of games with awful storytelling but both systems have a legitimate list of titles with story's that are at least decent or better. If I didn't know anything about the Wii and received the above replies to the question of games with powerful narrative, you'd bet anyone worth their salt and BASIC knowledge/experience in literature and film would avoid the system like the plague.

Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn is awesome. I must agree with Words of Wisdom that starting on Easy is very wise (and even then the average gamer will get into trouble).

Path of Radiance is great as well and a great intro into the series. Don't go for the DS game if you want a deep storyline.

I've never understood these types of posts.

Did you honestly take a moment to read what we are suggesting before deciding to take the intellectual high ground by comparing other media to the video games listed?  No, of course not.  You saw an opportunity to insult others with a cheap jab and took it.

The reality is that the posters here are suggesting games with strong narratives in comparison to other Wii games and attempting to help the OP/OP's friend by naming a game he might enjoy.  So congratulations, you defended a position no one was attacking and no one in this thread cared to argue.  Oh and you managed to completely avoid saying anything helpful or useful to the OP.  Well done.

Go troll elsewhere.

I'm glad that your 5th post on this forum is of such excellence. Bravo! I think we can expect great things of you, although the pleasure will no doubt be short if you continue like this.

Thank you everyone, he's happy now and will try each of those games one at a time.

Also good on you Words of Wisdom, that's exactly right, he wants a Wii game with a powerful narrative relative to the other games on Wii so you were absolutely right with your last post

There's no talk here about finding a wii game with a "compareatively" powerful narrative. All that was asked was a "powerful narrative".

There's no point of offering suggestions just for the sake of listing games with narratives that while better than the average game, are still CRAP. It speaks of a sort of desperation when one has to say "comnparatively". A game, movie, book, what have you with a powerful narrative should stand on it's own as having a gripping storyline and not be named simply because it is better than a 5th grade attempt at writing.

If we chose our doctors, scientists, technicians and film directors based on the fact that they are mildly better at what they do than the average Joe flipping burgers at McDonalds our society would not get very far.

If you really wanted to do a fair service you simply would have said that, I'm sorry, but if you're friend is looking for "powerful narrative" (again, see keyword) then he will not find one for the Wii, and arguably very few for either HD systems. Maybe rephrasing the question in your answer as "however, in comparison to most wii games the following have better storylines, albeit still very weak by most other literary standards".

Simply listing games because they are slightly better in a certain regard than most others (that are trash) is not doing a service to anyone. It's the equivalent of saying "Hey, my crap is better than yours!!".

No More Heroes comes to mind, if he likes Zelda then Okami is basically the same thing, Tales of Symphonia is a RPG duh, honestly I've gone through so many Wii games...

I'm Unamerica and you can too.

The Official Huge Monster Hunter Thread:

The Hunt Begins 4/20/2010 =D

Fatal Frame was the first game that came to mind when I read the OP.
