LOL, wow, some people seriously want stickball to get it with this prediction :p

The prediction didn't bug me, just the condescending tone he used to convey it.

Well, lets be fair here. Demon Soul is a pretty big budget game, aimed squarely at the Japanese market. Sales look pretty promising - although its bound to be top-heavy.

That is so not true.  Japanese retailers completely screwed up for this one.  They underestimated the demand of this game and ordered too few copies for sale.

Honestly, with so little information about this game before launch, and the art style of this game is so westernized, who would have thought that this game could be decent and Japanese core gamers totally buying into it.

Well, it seems a very Japanese market game to me. Nothing to do with sales though - its no surprise retailers haven't order a huge number of units.

So how many games that are NOT established IPs have actually done well in Japan over the last 6-12 months? Any?

But, lets be fair here.

No matter what it's still a pretty good sales than expected.

It's also funny that people have been predicting for months that those low-budget JRPGs would end on the Wii, while most of them have been announced(exclusively) for the PS3.

And most of the the big ones are for the PS3. (but to be more accurate, most big pushing Japanese games are on PS3, not necessarily RPGs)

I've noticed these RPGs have started to be announced once the PS3 went over the Wii this year...I'm expecting more PS3 announcments when the PS3 gets similar boosts from GT5, T6, Tales, whatever. And although it's far away, once FFXIII + FFXIIIv are released we'll probably see a ton of announcements of RPGs to capitalize on that fanbase. Probably before too.

Fixed.

Haha~ Priceless. Very true what you said there.

Just like that one Ninty fanboy beleive... I also beleive this senario :D

Well...that's Mr. Stickball for you. No offense to him but I don't think he sees anything optimistic about the PS3.

Respect for stickball but damned that cracked me up XD;

Everything did horribly. Demon's Souls did ok, I guess. Probably won't reach 50k which is still fairly bad.

Out of only one reason: 50k weren't shipped. It'll do at least 80k man.

No, it won't. With a 23k opening, it will sell between 30k and 35k first week, provided they were able to ship more units to retailers.

And with it opening at 30-35k, how is it going to manage beyond a 2x multiplier? This is Japan were talking about.

This generation, for all 3 consoles (X360, PS3, Wii), the following games managed beyond a 2x multiplier:

  • Blue Dragon (X360) - 82k Opening
  • Fire Emblem (Wii) - 73k Opening
  • Pokemon Battle Revolution (Wii) - 60k Opening
  • TES: Oblivion (PS3) - 22.9k Opening
  • Enchanted Arms (PS3) - 14.4k Opening
  • Argarest Senki (PS3) - 9.0k Opening

Looking at this list, we note that all the PS3 RPG's were below Demon's Souls first day. The rest of the games above it were on other systems.

So it's a pretty safe bet to say that the game will sell between 50k on the low end, and 65k at the very high end.

I guess someone is eating his words right now. Sorry for thread-necromancy, but in light of the good sales of Demon's Souls (first PS3 game to ever return to the japanese preliminary top20 after a week of absence) I think this is justified.

Wow.  That argument was weak.  He even conveniently ignored Valkyria Chronicles, depsite the fact that it was right at the 2x mark when he made that post, and was still selling at the time.

Then the anime came along, and that along with a price cut really boosted sales:

http://www.vgchartz.com/swlaunch.php?reg1=Japan&game1=Valkyria+Chronicles+-+PS3&reg2=All&game2=&reg3=All&game3=&weeks=60

Of course, stickball's general premise was correct.  Games outside of Mario Kart and Monster Hunter rarely have legs like Demon's Souls in Japan.  The game is enjoying some extremely positive word of mouth, keeping sale afloat.

I probably would've leaned towards his side when he made that post, but probably would've predicted around 100k lifetime for the game in Japan.

Pretty good legs for Demon's Souls!

Will probably get a Western release by the end of this year. It's released in English, and everything! Does it take them this long to make a manual?

@ Kantor

Korean version has English manual.

"We'll toss the dice however they fall,
And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."
