Forums - PC Discussion - New Phenom II CPUs priced

http://www.techreport.com/discussions.x/16326

http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/733/1050733/am3-phenom-iis-listed

These articles list the new Socket AM3 Phenom IIs and their likely US prices. These will work in current Socket AM2 motherboards with DDR2 memory, or new Socket AM3 motherboards with DDR3 memory. The use of DDR3 will improve performanec by up to 5% depending on workload, and there is another boost from the 200MHz increase in northbridge and HT speeds on all AM3 models. All of these listed are expected to arrive within the next 2 weeks, while the 945 and 950 are in Q2.

Confirmed:

Phenom II X3 710 (Tri-core, 2.6GHz, 6MB L3, 95W TDP) (~$124)

Phenom II X3 720 Black Edition (Tri-core, 2.8GHz, 6MB L3, 95W TDP) (~$144) *Unlocked multiplier for easy overclocking*

Phenom II X4 810 (Quad-core, 2.6GHz, 4MB L3, 95W TDP) (~$176)

Rumoured (unsourced, but seen on AMD roadmaps):

Phenom II X4 925 (Quad-core, 2.8GHz, 6MB L3, 95W TDP) (probably $195 - same as current 920)

Phenom II X4 945 (Quad-core, 3.0GHz, 6MB L3, 125W TDP) (probably $235 - same as current 940)

Phenom II X4 950 (Quad-core, 3.1GHz, 6MB L3, 125W TDP) (>$235)

Any comparisons to similarly priced Intel chips?

Do want. Especially with an AM3 socket.

I'll say bleh. I'll be building a new system soon and it's gonna be an OC'd i7, DDR3, GTX295 build.

AMD used to provide so much more performance per pound but now they're less efficient and just not as good value as 4 years ago :(

nForce 780i MoBo
1.25TB HDD (1x1TB, 1x250GB)
A+ El Diablo 2 Case
Vista x64

Not yet, at least by trusted review sites.

Here's what they'll compete with:

Phenom II X4 950 with Core 2 Quad Q9550 (2.83GHz)
Phenom II X4 945 with Core 2 Quad Q9400 (2.66GHz)
Phenom II X4 925 with Core 2 Quad Q8300 (2.5GHz)
Phenom II X4 810 with Core 2 Quad Q8200 (2.33GHz)
Phenom II X3 720 Black Edition with Core 2 Duo E7500 (2.93GHz)
Phenom II X3 710 with Core 2 Duo E7400 (2.8GHz)

The quads should win outright, and the tri-cores will lose on 2-threaded but win on 3- and 4- threaded applications.

Yes. AMD doesn't offer anything above $235 (below that they DO offer the best value). But you're a tiny minority of the market.

Also, why did your entire market segment complain that the 4870 X2 wasn't good value when it was the performance leader because it was two-on-one-chip, but as soon as Nvidia does the same you all totally go out and buy one?

Heh, i never complained about 4870X2 being bad value, it was cracking value and it made me feel bad for nVidia at the time.

I didn't buy the X2 for 3 reasons -

1) I had no money at all and what little i did have was being used on things like keeping my car going.

2) I like EVGAs cards and that means buying nVida cards.

3)I'm a bit of an nVidia fanboy because my friend used to work for them and they let him start as a teaboy at 15 before he got moved up and started helping with various more advanced things. So basically from everything i saw they treated their staff really well.

I'll admit, i was a bit gutted when the x2 came out because i'd expected the jump to the GT200 core to be as big as the jump to the G80 cards was.

There aren't any and i wouldn't imagine there will be any, there's no point really.

i7's are priced through the roof...DDR3 phenoms interesting but I'll wait for DDR3 to come down a bit first.
