Forums - Sony - Is there any chance for Sony to beat Microsoft in 2009 ?

nightsurge said: I was just saying if every PS3 fanboy wants to scream about the 360's head start as their main advantage, they should also realize how awful of a headstart it was, and had they waited to launch later, or had an improved product at that head start, it could have been much worse for Sony.

I think you're totally wrong here. I don't really think the problems MS is having with hardware affected sales during the 1st year they launched. By putting their product on the market first Microsoft did scoop up a lot of sales of people who wanted a next gen console and didn't want to wait another year for one of the other 2. I know thats why I bought one in November of '05. I didn't have anything else to get for Christmas so I waited overnight at Best Buy and got a 360. Now would I have bought that $400 dollar 20gb Premium 360, LIVE subscription, extra controller, Perfect Dark, COD 2, and Recharge kit if the PS3 was sitting right next to it for either $500 or $600? Hell no. Microsoft penetrated the market early and had zero competition for sales such as mine. Kudos to them, no ones complaining or thinks its cheating (cheating? are we on the playground?). But to compare sales as if the PS3 being on the market for 2/3 the time of the 360 hasn't had an impact in total sales is illogical. Not to mention the friend factor. Which console do all my roommates have because I had the 360 first? You guessed it. Microsoft selling their 360 early and getting out Halo 3 and Gears of War was brilliant. Who wanted a PS3 back then? I know I didn't. Times are changing though. Anyways, I wasn't whining, I was making a logical point for the arguement. I have nothing to whine about, I own my console now and couldn't be happier.

Blu-ray drive, XDR RAM, CELL Processor? I agree the PS3 has it all and the kitchen sink but it is pretty bleeding edge when it comes to tech.

nightsurge said: Also, as a 360 owner (and a PS3 owner) I will be playing every best 3rd party game on my 360 and every best exclusive on either console. The 2009 line-up of exclusives for both systems is debatable on which is better.  The 360's is better for me, especially when only 2 games of the 5 major ones on the PS3 I want are likely to make it out (Killzone 2 and Uncharted 2 will, but GT5 and GOWIII likely won't).

That's good for you. I don't buy too many games a year, but this year is looking amazing so I might be making some exceptions. I think for exclusives Killzone 2, Uncharted 2, DC Universe Online, White Knight Chronicles, maybe the new Ratchet, and HOPEFULLY God of War III or Gran Tourismo 5, either one would make my year. We'll see what is said about MAG. I need the 3rd party games Tekken 6 and COD MW2. My brother has a 360 now since I got rid of mine, but I still prefer my 3rd parties on the PS3. IMO its just a better experience with the console being so quiet and never worrying about it crapping out. In my opinion in no way, shape, or form do the 360's exclusives come close to the PS3's, but to each his own.

it's possible. Sony beat Microsoft almost every week WW last year until 360 got its second price cut and then Sony lost overall for the year.

Your right. Imagine this : Killzone 2, God of war 3 and a price cut. Man... seems that 2009 is gonna be the year of Sony for sure.

You are reading too much into what I am saying.

I was not specifically referencing the first year of sales when I was saying that there were many negatives and hardware issues. The whole RRoD debacle likely scared many possible sales away from it (after the first year).

And sadly, for most fanboys, yes this is a playground and they do think of the headstart as some sort of cheating.

XDR ram is proprietary, but not any revolutionary bleeding technology, and in fact it would have been better for them to include more traditional ram. The Cell is nothing special either, really, and they'd have been better off making something more traditional and adding in a discrete physics chip to make it easier to program for and cheaper. It's new tech, but not the most powerful by any means when it comes to processors. So I guess that leaves just Blu-Ray, which was a blessing and a curse in different ways.

If 360's were pulled off the shelf for a year, you know, to even the time they've BOTH been selling.

The early launch is one of XBox 360's advantages. There is no way to have them on some equal playing feild becuase we would also have to change the hardware of the PS3 and their game library. The reason consumers pick one over the other are for reasons people want to remove. Early launch helps to get early adopters and 3rd parties (more long term then short term really). Price also attract consumers as does games and game library.

I will say that Microsoft will beat out Sony this year. Price drops are tempoary, and I think both hjave snagged mosty of the buyers waiting for a lower price, so a drop will not help very much. Also, Microsoft didn't do much better with the price drop, Sony did worse.

Yes and they likely will. I guarantee they will if they drop the price. If not, the great exclusive games will help but not be enough.

I’m saying its not going to happen this year "09" and I predict the ps3 will overtake the 360 towards the end of 2010 NEXT YEAR (however the gap between the 360 and PS 3 will diminish slightly this year "09"). This does not conflict with a 365 day year.

Tip of the day: pull your head out your @$s

"Use this : Windows Start button -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Calculator"

Also, I'm on a Mac

This is your first and only warning: There was absolutely no need for the pull your head out of your ass comment.  Making it in leet speak doesn't make it any better or cooler either.

Cool it with those kind of comments and you'll do well here, otherwise you just won't last long.

Isn't God of War 3 believed to be coming out in 2010? So why then, is it being used to prop up the PS3s 2009 lineup?

Tease.

Of course Sony has the chance, in fact, im sure PS3 will sold more units than 360 by the end of the year.

LTD or just for the year?  For the year, there is only a slim chance... and it all depends on when/if Sony does anything.  LTD PS3 higher than 360 by end of 09...? not a chance.

I actually agree, I don't believe Sony will outsell MS this year. If your talking about this generation as a whole though, thats another story. I think the PS3 will surpass the 360 in sales sometime during Q2-Q3 2010.
