Its obvious that because of Sonic's lack of a shirt he can't go every where that Mario can and thus not as many sales. I thought everyone knew this.

I hated Secret Rings, and Sonic Unleashed was okay, not fantastic to me.

Problem is that if Sega turned Sonic back to 2D, the maturity of the new generation of gamers(kids and teens) won't buy or they will return the game once they find out its 2D(IMO)

The people saying that Sonic simply isn't as versatile are right. Sonic's world was just never fleshed out the way Mario's was. Sonic's world is full of contradiction, since originally it seemed to be about an animal living in a world of animals and fighting an evil human, then with Adventure they threw all that out the window. From Adventure to Shadow the Hedgehog, it seemed like they were trying to build a world with some sort of continuity, but then just dropped it all from Sonic 2006 onward, and even more so with the Sonic storybook series.

 

That was one of the problems with Sonic Chronicles. With Mario RPG and Paper Mario, the items you used made sense within the Mario continuity, but then there was Sonic Chronicles: POW Candy, Rock Salt, Clover Juice? wtf?

well sonic 1 was superb as was sonic 2, but it just kept going down from there on.

Ok, maybe Sonic is getting the way to the success back.....it has sold more than 2 millions on Wii with Secret Rings and Unleashed is quickly becoming close to platinum.....of course, that is not comparable to the 8M of Super Mario Galaxy.

well, the more parodies you get, the more awesome/popular you are, how many parodies of sonic are there compared to parodies of mario and zelda and so on.

Did the fans ask Nintendo to sitick Mario in a Kart racing game, on a baseball diamond, basketball court, or soccer (football) field?  I am under the impression that Nintendo wants to do a game in a new genre, and they stick Mario in it, to get that game promoted.  However, Sega tries the same thing, but it doesn't seem to work.  The question being asked is why.
