Forums - Nintendo - Problem with Wii's MAC address and getting online

Here's the deal:

I live in college dorms with wireless internet that normally doesn't allow game consoles to connect. However, all of my buddies with XBox360s can simply change their alternate MAC address to match that of their laptops (which have been registered and approved to access the school network) to get online, effectively tricking the network into thinking that the XBox360 is a laptop. I find it weird that this is possible, considering that a MAC address is supposed to be permanent, and the Wii has no such feature.

So my question is:

How can I manipulate my Wii's MAC address in a similar fashion to the XBox 360, if it is even possible?

Also, I have a router at my disposal, but I don't know how it could help solve the problem.

Post this in the PC section, I find that answers to such things are easily answered by the ever vigil VGC geek squad.

I'm Unamerica and you can too.

Go to internet settings, set connection manually and enter the MAC address?

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

Or maybe you can change your laptop's MAC address to match the Wii ones, then give it to the network admins.

Another (probably simpler) solution would be to route your connexion from the network through your laptop to your wii. Maybe use a Nintendo Wifi dongle for an easy setup.

I'll check out those suggestions. Thanks guys.

That doesn't work, not with wireless connection at least. The Wii does not support ad-hoc wireless connections (such as those made between laptops), it only supports connecting to a router. At least that's the way it used to be. I know because I tried to do just that, before I got a router.

With the LAN adapter it's probably possible.

EDIT - corrected after reading your post properly.

I had a similar problem hooking up my Wii to the schools network (wired though, not wireless). I originally solved it by getting one of those Nintendo WiFi Connect things that go into your computer, and then can be used with your DS and Wii. After a bit, I realized I really hated it, so I got a router. I then set my router to my computers MAC address, and now my university's network thinks my router is actually my computer, so anything hooking through the router (wired or wireless) is able to access the internet. That's how I have it. I then got one of those USB to ethernet things from Nintendo for the Wii, so now my Wii is wired to the router instead of wireless.

MAC addresses are supposed to be unique (the hardware manufacturers buy them and assign one to each piece of hardware they produce)

However, some user devices allow you to set the MAC address (generally for debugging purposes). You can change the MAC address of your PC/Laptop too (or at least spoof it), but you need to have the right tools. The Wii doesn't allow you to set the MAC address, so your only option is to get an adapter for either wired LAN, or a wireless adapter for your laptop/PC.

The problem with assigning both the Wii/X360 and laptop to the same MAC is that it will confuse the router if you try to put both on at the same time and then you don't really know what will happen.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

Buying a Nintendo WiFi USB Dongle is the only way you'll be able to do anything with this i'm afraid. The Wiis MAC IS locked and other than assigning a static IP address for the Wii the options for its internet connection are woefully limited.
