Forums - Gaming - Six Things Microsoft and Nintendo Should Steal from Sony

Didn't notice this until now:

6) Wouldn't this be something Nintendo and Microsoft copied from Microsoft? Beyond that hard-drives are amazingly expensive devices which don't see much in the way of cost reductions. It makes far more sense for companies to copy Nintendo's approach with the Wii in this generation and include flash memory as a standard being that 100GB+ of flash memory in the next generation will be very inexpensive.

a. Standard HDD? No.
b. "amazingly expensive"?? And if size explodes but remains the same cost, well I guess I can see why you'd interpret that as no cost reduction.
c. 100GB "very inexpensive"? You may be right about flash memory being better (although having swappable HDD in the PS3 is very handy) but I seriously doubt it'll be as cheap as you imply.

"6. Are you insane? Nintendos storage solution is a fucking joke, it's something that drives me insane. If they all do that next gen, im PC only."

The joke is to believe that storage will be a problem like that next gen

I wonder if the other two lists are going to consist of ways to make the other companies lose money the way this one has.

Also what does #2 mean? What's so restrictive about XBLA in comparison to PSN and what does that have to do with Flower? Is it a big file size or something?

That's exactly what it is. You won't see any games the likeness of say, Warhawk, on XBLA. No matter the size, you can put your game on PSN. Can't say the same for XBLA. The only time they let you put bigger games on XBLA is from big companies.....and even that is only so they don't look bad in front of PSN (ie Street Fighter HD Remix and Bionic Commando, where the XBLA versions would have not been 1080p (or even 720p if I remember correctly) because of the file size)

This is the first of a three part series where we discuss the advantages of each of the three video game console makers.  Obviously, this first article is about Sony; here are six things the company has done brilliantly, six things that Microsoft and Nintendo should ripoff in an instant.

1. Build a Future-Proof Console

??? Nintendo sells the Wii at a profit. There will be 4x the number of PS3.If we ran the idea of the Wii 2 half way through he PS3 life. Then Nintendo(assumine simmiliar sales) will make twice the profit. Invalid argument. Though I will agree that buying less consoles would make me happier. I see the Wii2 coming out after 7 years.

2. Make a Less Restricted Downloadable Game Market

You don't play WiiWare games do you? World of Goo, Lost Winds? Good games don't need large size. Code is small. It's only art and audio that takes up space. Though personally I think the Wii would be better off with 2gb rather than 512mb. Then again this is something we will likely see in the Wii2.

3. Make Rechargeable Batteries the Standard

I think I would indeed like rechargable battery packs and charge stands bundled with the Wii. The Wii controller is the most advanceded wireless controller for consoles and thus uses up lots of power.

4. Implement Blu-ray

No thank you. MS is proving that even with HD the 9gb DL-DVD is holding it's own. I would however prefer to see the 16-32GB SD Flash cards used instead. If were talking about a new console in about 3 years. This is totally doable. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820211245  this is a WORM. A ROM version would be far cheaper and easily made faster.

5. Make a More Media Friendly Console

This is a pure software issue and nothing much to do with hardware. The Wii Homebrew community has some really nice media features. If a commercial company with proper tools did some media software it could easily stand up. Then again the Wii is getting varias Japanese television and the british BBC shows. So It's a nice bonus, but not a nessitity.

6. Put a Hard Drive in Every Console

Your too caught up on the HDD and this links to the above number 2. Wii has no HDD but does have storage. Just increase it a bit.

Who ever wrote this must be enjoying their Sony morning cereal.

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.

a. The XBox had a standard hard-drive 5 years before the PS3 did

b. You're correct about what I was implying with no cost reduction, and the reason I consider a hard-drive expensive is because it costs 25% to 50% of what most people are willing to pay for a gaming console.

c. 32GB USB keys are in the $60 to $100 range at retail where the manufacturer and store make profit off of them; and an 8GB USB key can be bought for as little as $10. It really wasn't that long ago when a 1GB USB key was over $100, and the next consoles will be released in 3 to 4 years when we will (probably) be seeing USB keys that are 250GB or more. Now, maybe 100GB is optimistic, but the console manufacturers will certainly have access to 64GB of flash memory which will probably be sold at retail for under $20.

a. Good point, I guess I didn't look at it that way because MS then walked away from their own idea, but they still did it first.
b. I could find this out on my own, but if you wouldn't mind telling me the cheapest HDD price? [edit:  $27 for 100GB (2.5" of course) after a minute or so on Google.  Last time I saw a console going for $54 it was the Dreamcast in its death throes.  Or possibly not even then.  Even at the 25% mark, that's $108, less than the PS2 is selling for.]
c. I can pretty much agree with that.

I don't really see this stuff improving the Wii or 360.

controller: definitely no question good idea. (especially in my house were four people play the PS3 and it's probably on for like 6-10 hours every day)
Hard drive: I like it personally. but it's not necessary. 5-10 gigs would be plenty if you don;t let us put media on it.

other than that, it's crap. The only thing that could possibly work out for the best would be Blu-ray because it could enable first-party PS3 games to be much larger/higher-res textures/more stuff to do than 360 games. However, this is a very remote possibility and if it happens at all it will be far too late.

Not trying to be a fanboy. Of course, it's hard when you own the best console eve... dang it

He's not a fanboy I hope everyone realizes that "This is the first of a three part series where we discuss the advantages of each of the three video game console makers.  Obviously, this first article is about Sony" So he'll be making two more articles about the advantages of the Xbox 360 and Wii.
