Western Game are more Technical with graphics and realism.
Character design are base off of Sci-fi movies like "Aliens" and corny Sci-fi Channel movies. Little to no story-lines, like aliens attaching us or WW2 or both at the same time. Majority of western Games are FPS so you are the character and only see their hands.

Japanese games are more artistic and visual.
Character designs plays a major role in the game development.
Character designers are pick to represent the emotion, mood and artstyle of the game more than West.
Yoji Shinkawa-MGS
Tetsuya Nomura-FF, KH
Kosuke Fujishima- ToS
Their game are more story driven like films with a lot of cutscenes.
They love to see their main characters and not just hands.

Long story short:
Americans are more about graphics and action, Japanese are more about artstyle and emotions.
I love alittle of both. I wish there was a mixture. That would be a great game.

You think America doesn't care about emotions?!

Well film-makers do,video games developers don't.  Americans don't care about great script/story writers and directing.

American games need better scripts and scenarios (Sci-fi and WW2 need to take a break), better character designs and styles, WAY better face expressions.

GTA did a good job with their script/dialogue but character designs needed help.

If they fix these things then I think Japanese people would American games more.

What game have you played that had emotions?  Maybe you know something i don't.

BioShock, Gears of War 2(it was a nice attempt even though it did fall flat at times), and many of the great JRPGs(those are Japanese developed games though)

Go and play a game like Grim Fandango and tell me that western games aren't the equal to Japanese games.

The point I'm making is both cultures have horrid developers and amazing developers. Most games made by both are crap. If you truly can't find lots of genius in both the west and the East then your simply blind or not looking hard enough.

Saying one is better or worse really is a matter of opinion and taste and many people need to acknowledge that just because you personally don't like something it doesn't mean thats its necessarily bad.

@Farmland, I prefer Japanese games over western games, but I also acknowledge that there are some good western games which I play as well. Again another rational poster, thank you Farmland for saying it how it is.

LOL!!! +1

Yeah, I still prefer Japanese games over Western games, although I admit there are some Western games I like.  When Japanese gamers think of Western games, they think of Gears/Halo Bald Space Marine games.  Japanese culture just doesn't relate to that type of gaming environment as well.  Unfortunately, many Western games like R&C or LBP that would seem to fit in just fine get overshadowed.

Luckily for Japanese devs, Westerners will buy Japanese games that suit Western tastes even if developed by Japanese.  But, some Japanese games just don't do well at all in the West.  Tales of Vesperia and Valkyria Chronicles have about the same percentage of people buying in the West that Japanese people buy shooters - if not less.

Japanese culture seems to pick things they like from the US.  They love Starbucks, McDonalds, Hollywood, Television shows.  They reject Cars and Video Games from the US.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

Conservatives:  Pushing for a small enough government to be a guest in your living room, or even better - your uterus.

Haha!

Japanese games rape western ones.

Since you seem to be such a Gears of War fan, tell me how is it any better than anything Japan has to offer.

relax, but u could u tell me why japanese games are so much better?  in my experience, many japanese games just seem too similar to each with not too much variety.  its mostly rpgs come out of there and not to say they are bad but i generally like games that aren't as slow paced and turn based has never been a favorite of mine.  and gears of war is a great game despite what you think but if you're not from the westerm part of the world than i could understand ur point of view

The GTA games are made by Rockstar North, residing in Scotland

OT: Japanese gamers have different tastes I guess. Wasn't there something about them not liking FPSs because of motionsickness or something?

I wouldn't talk about sense of taste if I was wearing a green tank-top had Gears of War avatar .

 gears of war is awesome!

Legacy of Kain/Soul Reaver series have the best story I have seen in a game by far.

I know... my english sucks

In the other hand Divi Dead has the second best (Japanese hentai game for pc, ADULTS ONLY) but it is practically a graphic novel, not a game in the strictly.

@FinalEvangelion: You propably mean USAn cars? Anyway. Can't blame them for not liking, but the reason why japanese car market is so inbreed, is because of the protection made with import tax (i'm not sure what the situation is at the moment). And on a side note, it's actually not that different from the USAn market, since they tend to say in the cars industry, that USA can be conquered only from the inside (which means in practice that you need to manufacture the cars in the US).
