the 360 version might just reignite this game. even 500k lifetime for the 360 version would be good.

How did Anarchy Online fail? It was a moderate hit when released despite technical issues, had major hit expansion packs, the Shadowlands one especially, had multiple expansions after that, and 7 years later it is still going strong.
It is very soon getting a grpahics overhaul and being updated with new visuals too.
Hardly a fail.
(Yeah I play it and will defend it to no end). |
Funcom lost a ton of money on it.
Didn't they make it free to play for 3 months as well, just to save it from going under?
Personally, I liked the game.
The main point is though - it was a crisis financially.

The game is already availble on PC... The game is mediocre... the game is a nich genre on consoles.... I very much doubt the 360 will reignite the game. Just scratch this one off your lists of xclusive when comparing it to the Ps3's sure it makes the list seem bigger but it will be easy to pick the list apart if you include.
And yet ultima online is still being played rofl

It's questionable if this game will be ported to begin with, Funcom has lost of a lot of money and have already layoff a huge chunk of their staff; heck the director and producer of AoC has already quit the company due to unreconcilable difference. Their ability to maintain servers for any extended period of time remains in doubt.
The future of this company looks very gloomy, hope they don't joined the increasing list of developers going over the edge...

Age of Conan was a disappointment. Funcom had the chance to make huge money but they made the biggest mistake possible on an MMO: released it unfinished - subscriptions based games get their healthy number of costumers through the quality of the product... so if the MMO isn't up to par, they will lose potential and fanbase.
Ofcourse I think AoC still made money - they shipped 1.1 millions copies on retail + whatever they sold through digital distribution + subscribers that are still hanging around. The game's budget was $20 millions, so it's all good.

During the launch there were technical issues mainly to do with CD keys, and they decided as good faith to not charge people during the buggy period, which was a month or so.
They were the first MMORPG to introduce a free-to-play scheme, it still runs to this day parrallel to the pay scheme. The basic game set on Rubi-Ka is accessable to 'froobs' as they free players are known, they can do many thing and enjoy 200 levels. Paying players get access to the expansions, they get an extra 20 levels (which are special levels worth a good 5 or so regular levels each) plus the shadowlands, ability to raid aliens in various playfields, unique encounters throughout Rubi-Ka that froobs can't access, and a load of other things. Both froobs and payers can play together which is great. A lot of new pay customers start as froobs, it really boosted the ammount of players, which is probably why other MMORPGs have copied the scheme.
If it did so bad finicially it wouldn't be going strong after 7 years. |
That logic doesn't work.
It hasn't, and won't, make back the money they spent - by a big amount.
The reason it is still going, is that they are now making money on it. Think of it kind of like the Ps3 (of course, not directly).
And Mibuokami, I don't think Funcom is going to file bankrupcy
Despite the company being pretty retarded when it comes to money, they keep getting people who invest tons. Just in the past 2 weeks, they have gotten 2 major investors.

Ha, well thats something I didn't know! The last thing I heard was the rumoured 70% staff layoff with Funcom confirming that 'some staff have been layoff to better persue our economic interest' or some crap like that. When a rumour that bad is floating around and the PR are not outright denying the figure (nowhere did they disagree with the 70%) then I can only assume they are in deep shit.
Anyways like Oyvoyvoyv said, there is no way this game made back even a fraction of the cost it took to create it. MMO development cost makes HD console games look like chump change. The initial sales are nothing, it's the revenue of the subscription that makes them profitable.
