During the launch there were technical issues mainly to do with CD keys, and they decided as good faith to not charge people during the buggy period, which was a month or so.
They were the first MMORPG to introduce a free-to-play scheme, it still runs to this day parrallel to the pay scheme. The basic game set on Rubi-Ka is accessable to 'froobs' as they free players are known, they can do many thing and enjoy 200 levels. Paying players get access to the expansions, they get an extra 20 levels (which are special levels worth a good 5 or so regular levels each) plus the shadowlands, ability to raid aliens in various playfields, unique encounters throughout Rubi-Ka that froobs can't access, and a load of other things. Both froobs and payers can play together which is great. A lot of new pay customers start as froobs, it really boosted the ammount of players, which is probably why other MMORPGs have copied the scheme.
If it did so bad finicially it wouldn't be going strong after 7 years. |
That logic doesn't work.
It hasn't, and won't, make back the money they spent - by a big amount.
The reason it is still going, is that they are now making money on it. Think of it kind of like the Ps3 (of course, not directly).
And Mibuokami, I don't think Funcom is going to file bankrupcy
Despite the company being pretty retarded when it comes to money, they keep getting people who invest tons. Just in the past 2 weeks, they have gotten 2 major investors.
