Forums - Sales Discussion - Profit Numbers: Nintendo, Sony (Game Segment) and Microsoft (EDD Segment)

So with the PS3, Sony has pissed away not only all the profit they ever made off PS2, but also almost 1/3 of what they made on PS1.

Also interesting to see they made about 50% more during the PS1 years than during the PS2 years.

The chart isn't adjusted for inflation so it isn't a good tool to extract conclusions from. All it really says is Nintendo has always known how to make money, Sony's loss leading model isn't the more profitable way to operate in the market and that Microsoft has finally turned a corner.

Good point, though that just makes the fact that their PS1 numbers are so much higher than their PS2 numbers even stranger.  And I'd wager that even with inflation, the PS2-era profits have been entirely nulled by the PS3-era losses.

They have been.  This is confirmed by financial analysts as well.    Every dime earned under the main PS2 years has been wiped by the PS3 years.

The rEVOLution is not being televised

*Update*

  • Updated Sony's sources to be shorter and accessible.
  • Changed Microsoft's numbers over to their FAS 131 numbers. (They used two separate accounting methods for some of their reports.)
  • Used the SEC Fillings for Microsoft's numbers. (Before, I had used their Annual Reports which can be harder to navigate.)
  • Added Microsoft's 2000 and 2001 numbers from their Consumer Software, Services, and Devices segment. (I found they had apparently made Xbox apart of that segment 2 fiscal years before it was released)

Thanks for the update. This is a very informative chart.

Good job!

Now, is there any chance we could get one chart adjusted for inflation?

What I find incredible is that Nintendo posted profits higher than Playstation in all years other than 2003 despite "losing" the generation.

losing the console war, but completely alone on the handheld front

Losing in sheer volume perhaps, but don't overlook the fact that the Gamecube brought a very healthy profit to Nintendo.

Wow, MS really had faith on its gamng division.

Maybe it is better substitute "Consecutive Profit/loss Chart" with "Consecutive Operating Income/Loss Chart".
