Note: Sony goes by the start of the fiscal year when naming their fiscal years.

Sony Global - Historical Data

1996 - 2009 figures: "SONY CONSOLIDATED HISTORICAL DATA" - P36 Seg1
(Note: They haven't updated their 1999 figures in the "Historical Data" to match the ones in their 2001 Annual Report so I checked their SEC submission to make sure it wasn't a mistake in the 2001 Report. I believe they don't have to be as careful with the "Historical Data" as they do annual reports and SEC submissions.)

Yen to Dollar Rates

The fiscal year currency exchange averages were calculated using FXHistory.

Notes:

1. Microsoft has irregularly reorganized (and renamed) their EDD segment and included products that aren't game related so their numbers aren't good for comparison with other video game companies.
2. Nintendo and SEGA's numbers conform to Japanese GAAP while Sony and Microsoft's numbers conform to FAS No. 131.
3. All numbers used are of Operating Income for direct comparison. Operating Income doesn't include Non-Operating Income, Interest Expense or Income Taxes. In other words this is not the "bottom line".

4. The currency averages are based on their respective fiscal years (See fiscal year difference).

Interesting, but are the amounts based on current or historical yen/dollar ratios?

wow Nintendo has been printing money for a long time

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

The top chart's "Just In Dollars" total is based on current (as of now) rates.
The bottom chart's ""Fiscal Year" numbers are based on their respective fiscal year average exchange rates.

Very good information, nice seeing these kinds of charts from time to time.

Thanks

Wow look at Nintendo's 2008 year..

||Tag courtesy of fkusumot - "Heaven is like a Nintendo theme park!"||Join the Medal of Honor: Heroes 2 American League HERE!||

it's absolutely incredible that nintendo has never posted a loss, it hasn't even really been close.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

What I find incredible is that Nintendo posted profits higher than Playstation in all years other than 2003 despite "losing" the generation.

Thanks a lot for useful information TC. :D
