I never could understand why people are "happy" about firmware updates that fixes things. They should have gone out the doors patch free.

New features are fine, but no more than twice a year, it confuse the hell out of people that aren't technical.

uh, because games have always and will always have problems, but now they can be patched.

A lot of people are technical and there's nothing confusing about an update that adds a photo album function.

Developers: Just release it. We'll patch it after the customers beta test for us.

Would you rather a developer never release a piece of software until it was perfect? If so, you'll be waiting an eternity. Games have no more problems upon release than they used to have, it's just that now problems can be patched in a matter of minutes. If that's too much time for you, you need to learn patience.

@OP:
Every producer uses improvements not only to satisfy present users but also to appeal future ones, that is publicity. So yes, they are, and I'm not surprised at all.

Yahoo editorials... ugh. They will publish just about anything, it seems. I once read an article on there that actually blamed the PS2 for a war in Africa (over a rare metal). By following the sources of each article, I found that a blogger actually supplied the original claim that Sony was even using the metal that came from the Congo (one of a number of places the metal can be had). Here's his proflie: http://www.blogger.com/profile/13938778135772781354

Conclusion: Yahoo is anti-Sony and will post any pile of lies. This is clearly yellow journalism, and Sony should actually sue for it. I'm still an undergrad (though I want to be a lawyer) and I tracked down that fraudulent source in ten minutes or so. Their teams should be able to analyze all of the editorials posted by Yahoo against Sony and prove that Yahoo has been systematically engaged in defamation of character.

That article is pure moaning, and the only time we have had a "patch" released was when 2.4 (huge update) was released.
And compared to the dashboard of the 360, the XMB has used much more RAM than, and with almost each FW release, Sony has reduced that RAM usage, which is important for the game developers.
And with 2.6, we also got features like a safe mode and more things to do on the ingame XMB (http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=57685)

ChichiriMuyo:
"Coltan" wars have been cited in several TV serials lately, and this has surely tickled some bloggers.
The metals contained in it, including tantalium, are used also in electronics, but as uses are various, so are sources, Congo isn't the sole producer, so I agree that remaining generic for all other devices, while explicitly citing Playstation is extremely libellous.
BTW most end-users aimed complex devices producers don't use directly the mineral, they buy condensers from components producers, so, unless Sony directly produces tantalium condensers, explicitly hinting at it, unless first demonstrating it knowingly buys condensers from producers using war zones minerals, is gratuitous if not worst.
Besides, components producers buy highly refined metals and other elements from specialized factories, they don't buy raw ores.
There are real and big chemical companies that are accused of buying ores without caring too much about their sources, but that blogger strangely omits to mention even the biggest of them, Bayer.
Finally, coltan price rise and higher interest in extracting it wherever it's found, isn't due to PS2 production alone, every electronics producer that uses those condensers is indirectly responsible and amongst them, cellphone producers are much heavier users of them, once more accusing only Sony of even only indirect moral responsibility while omitting all the others is highly biased and derogatory, it's like accusing only a single car maker of being the main responsible of urban pollution and traffic.

I've never had a problem with the firmware updates though I do understand why some people are complaining. Still, problems are bound to come up when new features are added and new features are always a good thing. There haven't been many major issues anyway.

i don't mind the patches and i don't think it takes someone who is overly technical to be able to let the patch run - it is practically automatic and from what i heard there was only one patch where a small percentage of users got screwed (thank goodness i wasn't one of them).

i say keep them coming... and i don't think the xmb is that slow.
