i don't mind the patches and i don't think it takes someone who is overly technical to be able to let the patch run - it is practically automatic and from what i heard there was only one patch where a small percentage of users got screwed (thank goodness i wasn't one of them).
i say keep them coming... and i don't think the xmb is that slow.
