Forums - Sales Discussion - US Software: Metascore and Sales

I wanted to see how well the highest-rated games on each console sold here in the US. I thought "Madden Week" right before all the big 2007 games started coming out would be a good time to look at the numbers.

This is only for games that have been out for 10+ weeks. Other ineligible games are in italics. The Top 20 for each console are in bold: the numbers are Metascore, US sales in thousands, and weeks released.

---

Observations:

-Obviously the 360 has the advantage on this list because it has the most games right now (and the most quality games), and those games have been out the longest.

-The PS3 has decent software sales given the number of consoles, but an average of 200k sales for top 20 games seems dangerously low.

-11 of the 20 highest rated PS3 games came out between 37-40 weeks ago.

-14 of the top 20 PS3 games are sports or driving games.

-One problem for Sony is that a large number of those top 20 PS3 games are also available on the 360, even though some don't make the 360 list because the 360 has more highly-rated games. This is more a problem for Sony than Microsoft because a lot of those games get better reviews on the 360 than on the PS3 (see my comment below). Also, a surprising number of those games were released earlier on the 360 than on the PS3, even some of the sports games that we assume come out at the same time on all systems (for example, NBA 2k7). For both of those reasons, people who own both a PS3 and a 360 may choose to buy the 360 version of those games.

-44.8% of Wii owners have Zelda. 43.7% of PS3 owners have Resistance. 42.7% of 360 owners have Gears of War.

-Games that will eventually make the top 20:

360 = 3 (BioShock, Madden, DiRT)

PS3 = 5 (Ninja Gaiden, Rainbow Six, Madden, The Darkness, NCAA Football)

Wii = 4 (Resident Evil, Mercury Meltdown, Mario Strikers, Madden)

Also, vgchartz doesn't seem to have US sales figures for Trauma Center or Super Monkey Ball.

We don't provide the 'easy to program for' console that they [developers] want, because 'easy to program for' means that anybody will be able to take advantage of pretty much what the hardware can do, so the question is what do you do for the rest of the nine and half years? It's a learning process. - SCEI president Kaz Hirai

It's a virus where you buy it and you play it with your friends and they're like, "Oh my God that's so cool, I'm gonna go buy it." So you stop playing it after two months, but they buy it and they stop playing it after two months but they've showed it to someone else who then go out and buy it and so on. Everyone I know bought one and nobody turns it on. - Epic Games president Mike Capps

DiRT you are talking in sales I hope... because if that game passes the 80+ average point... I hang myself... that game is really nice but Micromachine has a better more realistic handling than that stuff....

I think it would be even more interesting to do the reverse -- take the top 20 selling games for each system and provide their metascore.

Thanks for putting this together! With all the links and research, it probably took you a couple of hours to create this post.

Numbers are like people. Torture them enough and you can get them to say anything you want.

No I'm not talking sales I'm talking Metascore. Don't ask me how because I haven't played it, but DiRT has a Metascore of 83.  Actually it wouldn't make the top 20 because Crackdown and NFS have the same score and when there were multiple games at the bottom with the same Metascore I chose the game with the highest US sales, so in this case #20 would be Crackdown.

The links didn't take any time, they carried over when I copied and pasted from Metacritic rankings.

I was hoping to look at it from the other direction also, maybe I'll get around to that eventually.

Also here's a link to some other information on the relationship between scores and sales.

Trauma Center and Super Monkey Ball sales are 200k and 300k. It`s funny that some of Wiis best selling games ( MP8, 950K, Wii Play, 1.5m and Red Steel 400k, are below 69% average ^^).

Also we will want to keep in mind that Wii Sports is not included in this calculation.  Perhaps you should do an alternate calculation with it included so we can compare the two.  Some will want it included and some not.

What are the figures for Wii Sports software sold in the US separately from the free copy that comes prepackaged with the Wii?

Can you please provide a link for that information?

Is that US sales only?
