I wanted to see how well the highest-rated games on each console sold here in the US. I thought "Madden Week" right before all the big 2007 games started coming out would be a good time to look at the numbers.
This is only for games that have been out for 10+ weeks. Other ineligible games are in italics. The Top 20 for each console are in bold: the numbers are Metascore, US sales in thousands, and weeks released.

Observations:
-Obviously the 360 has the advantage on this list because it has the most games right now (and the most quality games), and those games have been out the longest.
-The PS3 has decent software sales given the number of consoles, but an average of 200k sales for top 20 games seems dangerously low.
-11 of the 20 highest rated PS3 games came out between 37-40 weeks ago.
-14 of the top 20 PS3 games are sports or driving games.
-One problem for Sony is that a large number of those top 20 PS3 games are also available on the 360, even though some don't make the 360 list because the 360 has more highly-rated games. This is more a problem for Sony than Microsoft because a lot of those games get better reviews on the 360 than on the PS3 (see my comment below). Also, a surprising number of those games were released earlier on the 360 than on the PS3, even some of the sports games that we assume come out at the same time on all systems (for example, NBA 2k7). For both of those reasons, people who own both a PS3 and a 360 may choose to buy the 360 version of those games.
-44.8% of Wii owners have Zelda. 43.7% of PS3 owners have Resistance. 42.7% of 360 owners have Gears of War.
-Games that will eventually make the top 20:
360 = 3 (BioShock, Madden, DiRT)
PS3 = 5 (Ninja Gaiden, Rainbow Six, Madden, The Darkness, NCAA Football)
Wii = 4 (Resident Evil, Mercury Meltdown, Mario Strikers, Madden)
Also, vgchartz doesn't seem to have US sales figures for Trauma Center or Super Monkey Ball.
We don't provide the 'easy to program for' console that they [developers] want, because 'easy to program for' means that anybody will be able to take advantage of pretty much what the hardware can do, so the question is what do you do for the rest of the nine and half years? It's a learning process. - SCEI president Kaz Hirai
It's a virus where you buy it and you play it with your friends and they're like, "Oh my God that's so cool, I'm gonna go buy it." So you stop playing it after two months, but they buy it and they stop playing it after two months but they've showed it to someone else who then go out and buy it and so on. Everyone I know bought one and nobody turns it on. - Epic Games president Mike Capps
We have a real culture of thrift. The goal that I had in bringing a lot of the packaged goods folks into Activision about 10 years ago was to take all the fun out of making video games. - Activision CEO Bobby Kotick
