Forums - Sony - 3rd Parties: Why Would They Pick The PS3 Anymore?

lol flamebait. A majority of 3rd party games suck at retail??? If you are a third-party developer you have three possibilities

a) you develop for the Wii and you better hit the taste of the Wii community else you will go down in flames
b) you develop for 26m 360
c) you develop for 20m PS3
d) you develop for 46m PS360 and invest 10% more than in a 360 or PS3 exclusive. (and most multiplatform games sell just as well on PS3 and 360 if they are released simultaneously)

Hard choice. Oh and nobody cares about a "slap in the face" if they make a multimillion dollar decision.

Well said lol.

PS3 and 360 are dependent on each to compete with the Wii. In the unlikely event that the PS3 is discontinued early, it would be very interesting to see how the 360 alone could compete with the Wii.

That said, the Wii is still gaining market share which can only mean it will get more attention from developers, but it's still unclear how much (and how many developers will go bankrupt in the meantime).

This is true to, by the end of the day PS3+360 are helping eachother, if it was just one of them...the Wii would officially take the throne and would be a gaming defeat like no other.

Makes me wanna own both HD consoles even more now!

Apart from the odd figure where the PS3 gained 300k sales and the X360 lost 1.7 million, I would agree.... the combined base of PS360 is very appealing for developers, ie if they are not satisfied that their game will do well enough on one of them, porting is not too difficult and will give tham at least 1.5 times the sales if not more.

I think that makes PS360 development look more rosy than it is. There's also a lot of luck involved there, as you'll have to sell many more copies than a Wii version in order to get a decent return on investment. Not only that but you'll have to compete with Sony's 1st/2nd parties and their increasingly bundled titles.

It's not a problem if you're making a sequel in one of the established franchises, otherwise take very much care with expenses or you'll end up with a broken company. Something has to explain publishers' losses even at record revenues.

Exactly, i guess looking at it this way no one really noticed how well the HD consoles work for each other, without they other it would be game over.

Oddly enough though we still do get the odd-ball 3rd party exclusive such as Star Ocean 4 and Versus XIII. sure there only 2 games i an mention but i guess "Few" 3rd party exclusivety is better then nothing am i right?

haha your saying PS3 3rd party games suck? look at the Wii, they suck donkey fuck compared to PS3 3rd party.

What about GTA4, Bioshock, CoD4, Rock Band 2, Valkyrie Chronicles, MGS4 just off the top of my head.

Also for any large developer investing into how to port a 360 to PS3 game, it is mostly a one-time expenditure, with diminishing small costs with every subsequent ported game. Since the PS3 is in its third year it has escaped the growing pains of its first and second year. Next I believe it is easier to develop for the PS3 and then port to the 360 rather than vice-versa but I might be wrong. Finally any developer which has already ported games over has no reason not to continue to port without major incentives Microsoft or Sony since they’ve already invested in the large one-time cost.

Now as for new developers with limited funds they could probably forgo ports until they have the money to fund such a project. But if that was a problem wouldn't they be developing on the PC anyways (I'm assuming it’s the cheapest to development on; correct me if I'm wrong please).

Depends on the project, PC developement could exceed PS360 if you're making something big, equally you could just make a steam game and that'd cost next to nothing.

If you didn't have the funds for PS360 and not making a low-budget pc game, currently you'd develope for DS, Wii or PSN / XBLA.

As long as the split between the 360 and PS3 remains roughly 5:4 or 3:2, development costs for both consoles remains very high, and both consoles retain relatively small user bases (both still lag behind the N64!), companies will try to maximize profits by being multiplatform.

The danger for Sony will be if MS gains a more substantial lead over the PS3, so that it will be relatively safe for 3Ps to publish on the 360 alone.

I bet free radical & Factor 5 is asking that same question. But honestly, as long as porting is an option expect third parties to continue doing it.

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.
