Forums - Sales - Why dragon quest isn't popular in West?

Many jrpg franchises sells more in US than in Japan(FF, KH, e SO). Why dragon quest isn't capable to sell a million in west alone?

well DQ doesn't feature emo characters, its gameplay its 20 years old(but still magnificent) and the prominent anime designs made by toriyama aren't that appealing to a wide audience in the west

Because DQ requires you to grind and has a difficulty bent to it. Westerners want easy rpgs like Fable...

becuase ff took that place before than dq

yeah and games like Lost Odyssey... oh wait that game was hard and almost impossible without grinding in some parts !

Mostly because the game has remained relatively unknown in the west until it merged with Squaresoft. Also because Square has already built the FF series up in the west. The art style and battle mechanics may be a turn off to some westerners also.

95% of gamers don't know they are noobs, the 5% who do won't be noobs for long

The series is so unbelievably good, that it activates a chemical in the brain of the majority of westerners, which blocks the "fun" sensors from fully opening, This leads these people to have a skewered appreciation for the game, and in some cases, leads them to believe that the game "sucks".

Luckily, I'm part of the small percentage that doesn't get affected by this imbalance, and can appreciate the series in all its glory.

Trust me, I'm a doctor.

So... You used an example of a game that sold 800K to prove that hard RPGs sell a lot?

I don't think that was what the OP (or the quote) was looking for...

and its gameplay needs an overhaul like Kojima did with Metal Gear.
