Sony did create the L3 and R3 buttons. Microsoft gave us the "Home" button. Not exactly revolutionary, but still innovations that have become expected.

the PSP also has a Home button...wasn't it released in 2004?

Sony released the Sixaxis first by about two weeks They win :p

Nobody has ever copied the Nintendo D-Pad... At least... Nobodies copied it well... :p

Too bad nintendo doesn't copy themselves and hasnt released a good dpad since super nintendo.

Beside, Sega Satrun surpassed the Snes Dpad in every way.

A number of things Nintendo was not actually thr first to invent it, or even the first to bring it to gaming, but Nintendo just did it properly the first time.

There was a controller that had an analogue stick before the N64 one, I am not certain if it was full analogue (ie both direction AND pressure) but it was there first.

I think the most obvious thing though is the determination of Sony to 1-up Nintendo through the N64 era.

PS1 comes out with a controller that is just a SNES with handles and 2 extra shoulder buttons.

N64 comes out with it's analogue stick.

Sony put 2 analogue sticks in to make the dual-analog controller.

N64 adds the rumble pack.

Sony adds a rumble feature into each of the handles and makes the dual-shock.

----

It was a very "you have 1, but now we have 2" thing.

I think Sony may have been the first for memory cards... but then that was out of necessity due to the imposibility of storage on CD.... unless I am mistaken and there were previous memory cards?

Does he steal my pornography or does he steal other people's pornography and bring it to me?  Either way, it seems like a bad idea.  I have very specific tastes.......

"My personal pet peeve with Sony is what I perceive as a lack of originality. The PS1 launched with what was essentially an SNES controller with handles. As soon as the N64 launched with an analog stick, Sony announced their dual analog set up. Within months of the release of the rumble pak, Sony announced their Dual Shock controller. When Nintendo announced motion control as their top secret ace in the hole, Sony ditched their boomerang controller and had their own motion control 8 months later. Even minor things, like Gamertags and (rumored) achievement points, that set Microsoft apart mysteriously find themselves on Sony's formats.

I'm sure Nintendo doesn't invent this new technology, but they do take a chance and say "hmmm. maybe a touch screen can be good for gaming". Sony's approach appears to be "hmmm. that appears to be a good idea. we need our own version of it." Only Sony can be a leader and a follower at the same time."
