Considering this generation has marked the beginning of a truely segmented market,

Nope, that was marked off last generation.

by rough estimates casual gamers are 40% of the market

Probably more like 80% of the market is teh casuals.

sorry but your wrong on segmentation.  PS2 was a viable hardcore and softcore unit with little competition, the market was not segmented between units based on gaming style, it was segmented based on lack of competition.  This is one gen where 1 unit is almost entirely centered around the casual gamer.  Casual gamers are around 40-60% of the market, not under and not over, it also depends on how you label casual.  So labeling such is entirely opinionated, I would revamp my opinion to at least 50% though.

50% of the market is hardcore? So by the number of PS2's sold that means there are 60 million hardcore gamers. Is that your assertion?

What do you mean by "segmented based on lack of competition?"

I believe Wii will not see nearly the same success that it has now next gen. Unless the wii 2 has something else revolutionary to get ppl to go and buy it. Most ppl that bought a wii did so for wii sports and the like and most probably will have not much of a reason to upgrade.

But thats just me. I think M$ has just as good of a chance as Nintendo or SONY does next gen

If you take a look at the history of Nintendo controllers you'll notice that they change their controller drastically EVERY generation which to me says that Wii 2 won't have a simple Wii Remote upgrade

Nintendo will win this generation because they have the most innovative console on the market. They did something different than just "here's your controller, here's your console, here's your game". They came up with a way to make the controller seem like it doesn't even exist, and they applied it to simple and entertaining games that EVERYONE (as in E for Everyone) can enjoy. When 90 year olds are playing your system, there is definitely something appealing about it. (I have several opinions on the quality of Wii titles overall, but that's for a completely different discussion.)

If Microsoft or Sony came out with something that pushes the envelope in the next gen, (no, I'm not talking about the next gen Cell processor, gimme a break) that takes what the Wii did and makes the games even more immersive somehow, then they could easily take the crown back. How about full 3D HD graphics WITH a motion controller AND more games that aren't just for 8 year olds?

8 year olds, eh?

@impulsivity You sound a bit like MS flaming because you fail to give them credit for attaining a monoply in sectors like OSs to work from. When you set the standard, both technically and culturally, for Word processors and operating systems for 90% of users I would say that takes a lot of skill to begin with. To maintain such a dominance for almost 15 years now is amazing as well. Look at the basic user interface setup for any of the newer office programs or internet browsers and they are basically variations on MS's templates. BTW I'm writing this on a Windows 7 Beta partition and it beats the snot out of Vista.

Impulsivity, Sony has been a follower for many years now and that's the source of most of their present troubles.

I could talk long about it but it isn't the topic of this thread and besides, with a live card under my post it would just be just read as hate/bashing.

MS always works with formulas that worked in the past without thinking forward. MS was trying really hard to make the 360 like the PS2 when society has moved to the Wii.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

By re-inforcing their strangle hold on console gaming online. By including a HDD out of the box. By moulding their controller as a next step up from their last gen console controller. By making a HD console.

Right.. they're really following the PS2.

I know what you were trying to get at, but the only way in which the 360 tried to immitate the PS2 is the same way a new console always tries to immitate the number 1. In this case the only reasonable link you could make is that MS went out of their way to secure previously exclusive series and new series exclusively on their platform. But that's what any competitor with half a brain would do anyway.

The way I see it, whilst none of the 3 companies are true innovators, Nintendo tend to be the most "left field" in their approach, with Sony leeching off of their ideas that work and including them in future playstations.

We can't know for sure until the next generation what MS "business strategy" is, considering that any logical newcomer would have copied the then industry leader, but that's not to say that MS copies Sony.

I was thinking in terms of trying to have every third party game on their console, which gets them part of the way there.  In this generation, having good online of high specs out of the box (MS and Sony) was not what the majority wanted.  An inviting control scheme that doesn't put off non-gamers was what worked for Nintendo.
