Considering this generation has marked the beginning of a truely segmented market,

Nope, that was marked off last generation.

by rough estimates casual gamers are 40% of the market

Probably more like 80% of the market is teh casuals.

sorry but your wrong on segmentation.  PS2 was a viable hardcore and softcore unit with little competition, the market was not segmented between units based on gaming style, it was segmented based on lack of competition.  This is one gen where 1 unit is almost entirely centered around the casual gamer.  Casual gamers are around 40-60% of the market, not under and not over, it also depends on how you label casual.  So labeling such is entirely opinionated, I would revamp my opinion to at least 50% though.

50% of the market is hardcore? So by the number of PS2's sold that means there are 60 million hardcore gamers. Is that your assertion?

What do you mean by "segmented based on lack of competition?"
