Forums - Nintendo - Top 10 worst decisions by Nintendo

9. Their current anti-cheating crusades (such as locking certain save files to memory cards/Wii internal memory and trying to break cheat device support with each firmware update). Like most of their crusades against the players, it's just hurting their public image and making their long-time users irritated with them. Hopefully they'll catch on eventually and ease up.

If you are playing just single-player games then cheating wouldn't hurt anyone so in that way I agree. But in online games cheaters could make games completely unplayable. So there should be anti-cheating measures in online games. Better way though would be to just to ban cheaters automatically from online games.

i agree with the original list except for gamecube. well i partially agree with that. it was a bad choice to make it look like a toy rather than a serious piece of electronics. and the mini-disc format was a little silly, why not just have full dvd's to have 3 times as much space?

but the gamecube controller is the best feeling classic controller ever. nintendo has always been the innovator in controller design and gamecube was no different. way better ergonomically than the sony and microsoft controllers. it had an odd button layout but the only button that was a little awkward to hit was the z button, while even on xbox's small controllers the white and black buttons were awkward and the sony controller, well the problem with that is its decent, but thats it. it was decent when it came out but the n64 controller felt way better to play with and sony hasn't changed the controller at all except to add a couple built-in features two generations later.

i'd say the main problem with the gamecube was that other than elevating the quality of video game controllers as they do every generation they didn't make any other innovations. snes i guess didn't have much innovation outside of the controller but it had the most ridiculously amazing game library ever. n64 innovated with the controller, rumble, analog stick, 4 controller slots built it, and nintendo showed off how 3d games were meant to be played with mario and zelda. but then gamecube, all it did was once again make the best controller. it finally made discs their format but still were behind in that cuz they were mini-discs. didn't have a dedicated online system, didn't have any hugely innovative games like n64 had, still great library of games but didn't do anything special. then with wii they innovate the controller again but in a huge way and it becomes the main innovation and with that whole new gaming experiences are now possible. they are still lagging behind in storage space, format size, and online, and for the first time they are lagging behind in graphics but thats not as important these days.

anyway, i think the worst decision was to stick with cartridges for n64 cuz that turned third parties against them and into sony's camp which led to two generations of getting crushed.

Well ilovetogame, I agree with you on controllers and most of your post.

I just thought aI would point out a couple things about the discs. 1. a good reason why they didn't use "straight DVDs' is for piracy prevention moreso than aesthetics. Also, 1.5 Gigs of space was plenty for all games last gen. The best looking/running game was Resident Evil for Gamecube, Nothing else touched it. The fanboy/biased media didn't want to talk about that either.

In theory they made the right choice with it. To me the failure of the Gamecube was not Nintendo's fault it was due to Media/Journalist bias and Consumer ignorance on a massive scale.
Ahh I remember banning people from playing my Gamecube and berating them for buying a PS2, and told them to go play it instead. Only problem was they didn't want to. F 'em.

5 THINGS I'd like to see before i knock out:

a. a AAA 3D sonic title

b. a nintendo developed game that has a "M rating"

c. redesgined PS controller

d. SEGA back in the console business

e. M$ out of the OS business

4. Nintendo's dealings with Sony - The problem was Sony wanted to own all the rights to any title nintendo owned. They basically wanted to buy Nintendo out. When Nintendo refused they took all the info they had gained from working with Nintendo to make the PS1.

Dirty bussiness then, Dirty bussiness now... things never change do they Sony.

A lot of the complaints people have surrounding the N64 and Gamecube are talking points that resulted from Nintendo being the trailing console, and were not (necessarily) the reason for their lack of success.

Most Nintendo DS games are small enough that they would fit on a N64 cartridge, and few developers complain about not having enough space for their games ... Why this was a problem for the N64 was because the Playstation was dominant and (due to a wide variety of factors) developers choose to use uncompressed FMV to tell their story, which made games nearly impossible to port from the Playstation to the N64 without rework. At the same time, the love of developers for the PS2 demonstrates that developers are willing to work around a complicated architecture and deal with bottlenecks if they see value in it and the N64 was far less complicated and had far less issues than the PS2 did. These issues were brought up mainly because developers didn't want to work with Nintendo because of their Business Practices, the sales of the Playstation meant that they didn't have to, and these limitations worked as good excuses.

Yet their the longest running hardware gaming company. Isn't ten loses a fair trade for a hundred wins?

8th gen predictions. (made early 2014)
PS4: 60-65m
WiiU: 30-35m
X1: 30-35m
3DS: 80-85m
PSV: 15-20m

And yet after all those misstakes Nintendo have done they have earned a profit each year.

And here comes Sony... makes 1 misstake they they lost billions and billions och $
