In Pachter's defense, screw Sony. This is what an analyst does. That's his job, its what he is paid to do. If he thinks they'll be rolling out a price cut soon, and has reasons for it, its his job to say so.

This happens all the time in other areas - political analysts predicting who will or won't do well in a debate or race, economic analysts predicting the stock market, or the price of oil. Right or wrong, what they say has an effect, but its the job of the company (or pol) to stand up to the public and correct them, not go whining to the analyst. If Sony isn't cutting price, let them come out and say so.

As more companies learn to tap the true power of Teh Cell, the PS3 will become even more awesomer, and the price adjusted accordingly.

If Sony drops the price of the PS3 by $100 they will have to have each new PS3 owner buy how many games? 10-15? Where do you expect all these poor customers who would put off a year+ of being able to play a PS3 just so they can save $100 to come from? All the people that will be waiting for the price drop instead of just picking up a PS3 because of the games and other features will not be profitable for Sony. They might as well keep the price high. No incentive for a price drop. Who cares about "winning" or sales figures. It's about the bottom line.

So I guess he finally realized that Sony can't afford it right now, either that or the possible bucket of cash MS could have thrown at him to spout this crap wasn't enough to destroy what precious little reputation he has left.
