Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony might come back? I can't shake the feeling

I think if xbox drops the price again and ps3 is at a reasonable price you will see ps3 sell more. It would now be an image thing. Seeing a PS3 at a reasonable price would show you can get a high quality product with all the stuff included. With the 360 being at a way lower price it would be seem you are getting sticks and bones a basic package for a cheap price. To tell you the truth the ps3 is a year behind of the 360 it still has plenty of time. I think the sony plan will come into play here soon.

Your absolutely right that this generation it has not been all about graphics...I think Nintendo has benefited from the economic state that were in at the moment as people try to entertain themselves with a cheap alternative which in turn they can also share with family and friends...and Im actually happy Nintendo has come out on top this time around as I feared if that was not the case they would go under as Sega did with the Dreamcast.

As for the 3rd party games for Wii...those same third party games you say sell well on the Wii sell better on 360 or Ps3 unless they happen to be casual games that cater to everyone. Also the Ps3 is not so far behind the 360 only about 8 Million...thats better than say last Generation when Ps2 sold something like 100 million and Xbox and Gamecube at around 20 million and 18 million something along those lines...

I am not bashing the Wii either I just hope this wont be a trend...for Gaming Companies to just release a partially updated console with a new controller each generation and a bunch of mini games along with it...Im a hardcore gamer not a casual gamer Wii doesnt fit me...Maybe for My girlfriend or my Little Brother...Imight be new to this site but I am not a NEW GAMER been gaming since I was 5 and im 22 :p

No, Wii was a runaway success from the launch in November 2006. Back then the economy was still good. Besides 360 is now cheaper (Arcade) than the Wii, so the price is clearly not the reason for the success.

You can argue about what 3rd party games sell better (shooters will sell better on PS360, I'm sure) but it's clearly a mistake to assume that only minigames sell. Shaun White, Tiger Woods are examples of Sports games that sell better on Wii. Platformers, lightgun, point & click, puzzlers all sell better on Wii. You might not like these genres, but they're definitely core-games.

But again: most important is that 3rd parties do earn a lot of money on Wii and that for 2009 the 3rd party offerings on Wii have increased dramatically and we'll only see more, especially from Japan. Do expect 80% of the console JRPGs this gen to be on Wii.

For someone that already games for 17 years you have quite a narrowminded view on gaming. If you were a REAL hardcore gamer you would definitely like the Wii WITH one of the HD consoles, since it has a lot of (exclusive) games that a real gamer would appreciate. A REAL hardcore gamer would enjoy the games, instead of whining about graphics for 2 years. A REAL hardcore gamer would applaud Nintendo for making their hobby more accessible to others and expanding the gaming business so much.

If all new purchasers become like that guy on youtube(who has 23 ps3s), it is possible lol. It won't help software sales though

@BengaBenga

Im not narrow minded I play all types of games on ALL systems...just the Wii doesnt appeal to me in any sort of way...also the Wii is a success and you must not read right since I clearly stated that Im glad the Nintendo is on top this generation because if not I would fear their collapse in the gaming industry. The 360 Arcade I wouldnt even pick up I rather get a Wii than that cheap bargain...and Im not whinning about graphics you must be a Nintendo Fanboy because Im giving the Wii props its just what developers have been whinning about saying they cant put all these cool FPS on the Wii cause the Wii "cant handle it" FPS on the Wii WOULD BE A NEW EXPERIENCE AND A REFRESHING NEW ADDITION TO THAT GENRE...also I just dont want Next Generation of gaming to be all Casual games with old console technology with a new controller scheme attached to it.

I CANNOT bash Nintendo EVER they are the best Gaming company ever...they really got me into gaming(Atari 2600 aint cut it for me)Playing Mario and Zelda as a kid was one of the best experiences ever. Ive had all Nintendos system just not the Wii as of YET...

Also you have to see the bigger picture...those kids or anyone in general which have just entered the gaming experience with the Wii might grow up and be more into hardcore gaming down the line as myself...so I have to thank Nintendo for that...

Wow Can you Imagine if the Next Generation Wii had Superb Graphics along with a Great controller as the Wii? Wow FPS reinvented...

Ive, got to jump in here. Benga I believe your arguing a fallacy if  wii is last gen then gaming is in decline.

It would not mean gaming is in a decline, but rather that the gaming public was not ready for the next generation, and Nintendo for saw this and decided to milk that generation longer. concurrent running generations would not be a surprise as it has happened before, and is still happening with the sells of the PS2. The strong sells of the ps2 after 2 years of its replacement being on the market shows this is even better light. now a new last generation system being introduced so late into the generational system im not aware of a precedence of, this does not exclude it from the possibility. the fact remains console gaming is in growth whether it be combing of generations, or just on this current next gen.

I think I will look into the release timing of late generational introduced units. maybe misclassified units if we fallow the mhz/fx capacity rule as well.

personally I did not care until now what the wii really was, I considered it the winner this gen and moved on to the interesting discussion of whether the ps3/360 would end up in second

What it will come down to over this 6 year period is the games on the Wii and PS3.  I still think that you are going to see less sales for second and especially starting with the third games in series such as Wii Sports, Play, Music, Fit, as later installments won't really have much room for improvement over the earlier entries and Nintendo is going to have to rely on real games like Zelda and Mario at some point, but the PS3 will have many times the amazing games that the Wii is bringing to the market.  This will create a Gamecube versus PS2 environment between later Wii games and later PS3 games or perhaps a better example is a PSP versus DS environment and as much of last year showed, the PSP was dominating the DS in Japan right up to the introduction of the DSi (Wii 2) last year.  And last week the PSP beat the regular DS by 40,000 units in Japan.

What this sets up is a scenario where the Wii has managed to use a few faddish games to build up an early lead (much like the DS with Brain Training and Nintendogs); however, over the long haul when more traditional types of games are the ones dominating the market again, the PS3 will show how much better these games are on the PS3 than on the Wii and the PS3 will be routinely whipping the Wii towards the end of the generation pretty much the way the PSP does the standard DS.  Except it will be on a more global basis as the PS3 will get the best support of the two consoles from both Western and Eastern developers.

That translates into only about a 35-40% chance that the PS3 won't overtake the Wii by the time the PS4 is released.

WTF? Does reality play any part in your writings?

Lol.  I was thinking the same thing myself when I read that.

Lol.  I was thinking the same thing myself when I read that.  Considering that DS's Europe weekly sales quite often exceeds PSP's worldwide sales it shows how divorced from reality his comments are.
