Forums - Sony - Could Apple end up buying Sony?

OKay listen, Sony is the second biggest conglomerate in the world. They are part of a group called the big 10, which consists of GE, disney, etc. Apple does not even have a fraction of what it would cost to buy sony. And if you mean will Sony sell its console department, you are dead wrong. Not with the way that bluray has been selling

Do you have a link for this or are you making this up as you go?

@Gatorgamer: BD isn't in Sonys games division, so i have hard time to see how BD relates to it.

@kungfusqurrel: Actually Sony is making billions - in losses (this year). Sony also have very bad profitability margin and they also have extremely bad track record in estimating their profits.

In this thread was discussed how much cash reserves Apple has, and the market value of Sony.  If those numbers were true. then Apple could buy Sony.  They do have the money for it.  Sony is now bleeding a lot of money.  Blu-Ray won the format war, but hasn't broken through yet.  And the economy being what it is,  the adoption rate of Blu-Ray could slow.

@richardhutnik: If Apple would make an offer to buy Sony, Sonys shares would jump up in value. Of course, the offer would be above the current market value.

I don't think Apple usually buys into big companies. They will buy smaller companies to build new products.

Also, Apple has a history of screwing their partners. Dealing with them is like dealing with the devil. Look at what they did to Motorola.

or what motorola did to apple with the G4 chip, granted they spun that division off to become freescale, but between apple and motorola there has been almost nothing but animosity on both sides since the start of the AIM alliance. or you could look at how IBM screwed apple over twice before apple announced its surprise abandonment of PPC. How about the time apple was stiffed over some LCDs because of a cartel involving 4 major players in the lcd world.... (apple was a member of that case many companies were screwed including dell, and hp, they won, but i never heard what they won...).... the only companies I can see that apple ever really screwed were the mid 90s apple clone makers after steve jobs came back, since he refused to license O.S. 9 and above basically killing the clone makers

I doubt it will happen, as has been pointed out apple prefers to buy smaller companies. though though apple does have 25B in the bank, and no debt so they can out bid MS if they wanted to, but there is no reason to strain the fiancees to take over sony. Before the wii came out steve went to talk to nintendo in the though of a buyout from what i heard at the time, he pissed them off so no deal was done.

apple is rumored to be looking in to buying RIM lock stock and barrel

The scenario of Apple buying Sony would have to depend on Sony losing a LOT more value in the marketplace, and feeling it can't make it.  The stop would then jump to levels seen today, and Apple still have enough of a cash reserve to do it.  If Sony happens to turn things around, at least to break even point, then the Apple buying is NOT likely at all.

If Sony was a lean targeted company like Nintendo with a few thousand employees and no excess divisions in areas where you have no interest; I could see this as a possibility. But of course, these are the very reasons Nintendo isn't even remotely available.

To buy into a company with 160,000 employees, big debt, and a gazillion product lines in which you have no interest, and several are competitiive, to get a trademark that is at the moment somewhat tarnished and a few studios, not unless they were totally insane. Besides Apple doesn't want anybody else's brand anyway, they want their own, and Playstation doesn't even start with "I".

I'm sorry but the above is either exagerated or straight ridiculous .

Which part did you think was exaggerated ?
