Forums - Sales - VGChartz Polls and Fanboyism

What I'm seeing is the Wii poll hitting mid range and the PS3 poll being too low to look truly "fixed". If there were indeed individuals going out of their way to skew the polls then surely they'd make sure it got to the top?
And at the time these polls were held the PS3 had a clear advantage over the 360 and had outsold it by near one million units in that year alone so I don't think many people expected the 360 to perform this well and the PS3 to perform this poorly.
It could be as simple as this; Vgchartz users suck at predicting (the vast majority anyway, can you imagine when users of John Lucas proportions in craziness vote on these?).
I don't get this desperate need some of you have to peg everything bad on this site on PS3 fans, there are certainly more than enough assholes on all sides in here imo.

VGchartz is still very much a PS3 fanyboy.

At least its not as bad as it was last summer.

wow, whenever there's a problem, it has to be ps3 fanboys lol

"Dr. Tenma, according to you, lives are equal. That's why I live today. But you must have realised it by now...the only thing people are equal in is death"---Johann Liebert (MONSTER)

"WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler

My take:

Fanboys from every platform messed with the poll for the other two platforms. The Wii and 360 performed at or above expectations and thus the bias is obvious, the PS3 underperformed expectations and thus the bias looks like legitimate answers.

The fact is that when the PS3 poll was taken the odds were that the PS3 was easily going to break 20M, saying you knew it would happen is sort of like someone claiming they "knew" the Cardinals would get a home game for the NFC Championship.  Sure there might be one or two people out there who legitimately saw the logical steps of how the scenario would play out, but you're not that guy.

Or maybe that is actually what normal, sane, non-fanboy people expected. I'm no fanboy, I expected the Wii to do around 41 million. Most people did. Hell, most Wii fans did. As for the 360, it was doomed back then, remember?

Exactly....that's what I was saying.... the majority of voters were likely relatively new to the site and didn't understand how huge the Christmas boost was going to be, and thus they voted 2-5 million too low.

The PS3 was on track for over 21 million at the time, but because it slowed down it made those un-realisticly low expectations more realistic.

I do think the OP is making assumptions based on the data shown. Simply put, there was no way to predict that Wii would have such a stellar year. The polling data for Wii should be lower than actual performence since at the time the pollees would have been making a safe and realistic choice. Same for the 360, the success of the price drop and the lack of competition from sony could not have been predicted in Jan and thus the responses should skew lower. As for the PS3, stagnation was expected and stagnation was recieved, so the poll should relfect that assumption in Jan.

Also, they only way to really prove a PS3 fanboy bias would be difficult. My approach would require knowing which system each voter prefers then finding a median for the Wii+360 voters. Then I would find the median of the PS3 voters and compare the SD difference to the Wii+360 (if it's great than X, probably 3, then PS3 voters can be considered biased). But I doubt that data is even almost available.

Actually it was pretty realistic to expect around 45 million Wiis sold (I know I did).

- Sales were 20 million at the end of 2007

- production was at 1.8 million per month (or 21.6 million per year).

This means that even if Nintendo hadn't increased production, the Wii should be at almost 42 million by the end of the year... From there to 45 million is just a small production increase which was sure to happen.
