Forums - Sales - Statistics - how many % of total games sell 50K + on Wii, Ps3 and X360?

Again, don't forget the European factor. There are more Wii titles missing European numbers than either HD console. That means Wii is likely to have several more games in the upper levels of the sales ranges than is represented here.

How do games fail to sell 5K?

A game that sells that low means the publisher failed to get retailers to buy the game.  Perhaps they convined a few mom and pop shops to carry it but no retail chains.

Good games that sell poory are usually a distribution and marketing problem.

What if the game is really oddball, or very niche?  Such a title, such as VC that people hype up here, could end up having poor sales.

In regards to very small sales, less than 5000, wouldn't Internet distributed games fit that category?  Stuff over Marketplaces on the different consoles.

Ovyovyovy posted this in another thread, and I found it pretty interesting.

Anyway, onward to mail!

Wii:

Titles with 5K + = 459 titles

5-50K = 147 titles (32% fail to reach 50K)

50-150K = 112 titles (56.4% fail to reach 150)

150-250K = 55 titles (68% fail to reach 250K)

250-400K = 40 titles (77% fail to reach 400K)

400-500K = 18 titles (81% fail to reach 500K)

500-750K = 18 titles (85% fail to reach 750K)

750-1000K = 15 titles (88% fail to reach 1M)

1000-1500K = 17 titles (93% fail to reach 1.5M)

1500-2500K = 9 titles (96% fail to reach 2.5M)

2500K + = 14 titles (3% reach 2.5M)

Ps3:

Titles with 5K + 248 titles

5-50K = 42 titles = (16% fail to reach 50K)

50-150K = 55 titles = (39% fail to reach 150K)

150-250K = 32 titles (51% fail to reach 250K)

250-500K = 52 titles (72% fail to reach 500K)

500-750K = 31 titles (84% fail to reach 750K)

750-1000K = 12 titles (89% fail to reach 1M)

1M - 1.5M = 7 titles (93% fail to reach 1.5M)

1.5M - 2.5M = 9 titles (96% fail to reach 2.5M)

2.5M + = 8 titles (3% reach 2.5M or more)

X360:

5K + = 373 games

5-50K = 49 games (13% fail to reach 50K)

50-150K = 72 games (32% fail to reach 150K)

150-250K = 48 games (45% fail to reach 250K)

250-500K = 70 games (64% fail to reach 500K)

500-750K = 42 games (75% fail to reach 750K)

750-1000K = 24 games (82% fail to reach 1M)

1M-1.5M = 20 games (88% fail to reach 1.5M)

1.5-2.5M = 31 games (96% fail to reach 2.5M)

2.5M + = 12 games (3% reach 2.5M or more)

So overall,

5-50K = 32% 16% 13%

50-150K =
56% 39% 32%

150-250K =
68% 51% 45%

250-500K =
81% 72% 64%

500-750K =
85% 84% 75%

750-1000K =
88% 89% 82%

1M-1.5M =
93% 93% 88%

1.5-2.5M =
96% 96% 96%

2.5M + =
3% 3% 3%

I compared Wii to PS2, same exact percentage, 80% of games made less than 500k.

The Wii is doing fine and its only 2 yrs into the market.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Being niche or oddball can certainly play a role but not so much that it by itself is the reason for the low sales.  Being niche or oddball can make relailers reluctant to buy much stock which obviously limits consumers choices.

It's also a matter of few niche or oddball titles getting much media coverage or marketing money.

Internet only titles (like those in the 3 coneoles download services) are hard to market and advertise and are also subject to potentially low sales unless a fan base is already established for the title/series.

can't believe 81% of wii games fail to reach gold. With its massive 46 million userbase. More games reach 500k on PS3 with its small 19 million userbase.

No, a higher percentage of PS3 games break 500,000 ... The Wii still has more games past 1 Million than the PS3 has past 500,000

What? Are we reading the same chart?

The PS3 has 67 games that have sold more than 500k whereas the Wii has 40 million sellers.

Ey! Cool. And you gave me credits this time :)

I have to say, I thought the Wii would be in a better situation.  81% fail to reach 500K?

Equally many Wii titles reach 500K as X360 titles reach 1M!

Equally many?  It's by percentage...

The Wii has a LOT more games released for it per year.

More comprehensive charts +some additional data (assumed 5K+ = 100% of game library; PS2 data fairly incomplete):

This is what I would suspect. The Wii has so much shovelware that selling > 50K is still nice and profitable.

Yeah, but do you make equally much selling 50K on Wii as you do by selling 150K on X360? 300K on Wii as 700K on X360?

Considering the shipping fees, and all the costs that are connected, I doubt it. Having looked at this, I think the "make games for Wii, and earn more money" might be a bit narrow-sighted. I'm not saying it's wrong, but this data makes it look less likely (and at least not to as big an extent as others (and I) have believed (and most currently believe).

I think that this is one of the many cases where looking at the percentage gives people a false sense of what is really happening ...

We know that Wii games are (generally speaking) dramatically less expensive than similar games on the HD systems, and the Wii has a dramatically higher percentage of the library made up of "Low Budget" games than either of the HD consoles. As a result of this, you would expect that a basket of Wii games would generate a similar return on investment at a lower sales level to a basket of HD games.

Now, if publishers were correct when they were saying a Wii game cost 1/4 to 1/2 what it costs to produce a similar HD game and the number of low budget games keeps the average development cost close to the bottom of that range then if a sales level of 50,000 is bad for Wii games a 200,000 unit sales level couldn't be particularly good for most HD games ... If 200 Wii games sold to 150,000 units or more and the HD consoles only have 201 games which have passed 500,000 units sold which system has more games that have turned a profit?

(First, just to Kasz, I know that, and I don't think anyone is stupid enough not to get the point).

And Happy Squirrel (quoted).

You have a very good point. What I'm trying to prove here (not with the data, my later posts), is that the Wii isn't necessarily as good of a choice as previously believed.

I, for one, doubt that the Wii is that much cheaper to develop an equally good game for. I can buy that the average production cost on Wii is ~ 1/3 of the average production cost on Ps3, but that equally "good" games cost 1/3? I sincerely doubt that.

I'm not an expert on this topic (or really any topic :D), but I can't help but feel I've fooled myself up untill now.

It's actually even more cheaper... as the more you add to your team... the more money you lose to inefficiency.

What your not taking into account though is....

Games need

1) Good Programmers

2) Good Creators.

Miyamoto for example could make a better game for 1 million then a random programmer could make with 10 million.

Good developers are in short supply.

For good games, it costs a great deal more for HD consoles than Wii.    The production staff is much larger, the art assests (the most expensive portion of production) cost much more because of the texture resolutions required and the total volume, etc...

Red Steel (quality aside here) is one of he most expensive productions on Wii which cost ~$10 million.  How many HD games have we heard costing $30 million?  $40 million?  More?
