Forums - Sony - Nikkei: Sony expected to post $1.12 billion loss

Sigh, Can we Make an official "PS3 loosing Billions for Sony" thread. Included would be Quarterly reports, Profit Margins , Loss accumulated etc.

This is a new article with relevance.  If you are going to make 1 thread for such a vast topic why not do that with everything.  I get bombarded with KILLZONE 2 threads everytime I get on vgchartz.  There are litterally 3-4 new KILLZONE 2 threads being created every few hours.  Why don't you make a thread for KILLZONE 2.

No need for double standards.

Sony is hemorrhaging money. What should really scare them is the fact that the US is going to continue to hemorrhage jobs through the third or fourth quater of 2009. In other words 2009 could be way worse for them into a slow recovery of us markets followed more slowly by global markets into 2010(this would be the best case scenario). If you think consumer sentiment is at a floor then you are fooling yourself, because when shit really starts to hit the fan this summer; high fuel/energy prices, high unemployment, contracting real income, people are going to spend even less of their income and a price advantage for any goods will be paramount to selling product. It would be a shame to see sony fail, but not unimaginable. Just look at other historically resilient companies ie gm, chrysler, ford, alcoa, airline industry, music industry, investment firms(many historic failures in 2008 alone); virtually all corporations are preparing for a very cold 2009(ie slashing jobs), some will not weather it.

I posted a few days ago something like --Sony needs to survive this global recession as a corporation. In the next year they will have to make some serious decisions about what markets their products can grow in and where they can not.

This is NOT good...

4 ≈ One

I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft tried to exploit Sony's weak state by offering to purchase famous IPs or studios from them. Right now Sony owns around 8% of Square-Enix Holdings. I'm sure Microsoft would love to get that 8% and use it to leverage even more exclusives from Square-Enix Holdings.

Is today like "bash" Sony day, or what?

Oh wait.. thats almost everyday :(..

Sony has done a lot of it to itself, kind of the way that Sega did awhile back.

Nah, Sega effectly made 4 bad hardware choices in a row.

CD, 32X, then rushed the Saturn THEN rushed the Dreamcast.

Sony just made 1 mistake and the PS brand is still incredibly strong... i mean look at europe.

8% really won't give you leverage in anything decisions wise in a publically traded company.

Sega's experiments were not nearly as expensive as Sony's overextending.

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

It's not really about taking 8%, it's about taking Sony's 8%. Despite recent game releases, Sony still has very strong ties with SEH. If Microsoft can take Sony's 8% and purchase some more stock from other companies, they may be able to obliterate Sony's relationship with SEH.

$1.1-2.2 billion loss for the fiscal year means a $2-3 bln loss for the holiday quarter and the final quarter combined.

In other words, pretty much what some of us have been expecting and warning about for quite a while.

These two bad quarters are not going to be alone. They are talking here about "operational losses". This means that the core business is sick. This is not just a financial manipulation (i.e. writeoffs). Operational losses means that Sony is spending more money making, shipping and supporting the products then they are getting paid from consumers.

Since the core business is unhealthy then this is not something that is just going to stop at the end of the fiscal year but will take some time or some severe changes to turn around back to profitablity.

Prediction made on 11/1/2008:

Q4 2008: 27M xbox LTD, 20M PS3 LTD . 2009 sales: 11M xbox,  9M PS3
