Forums - Sony Discussion - The PS3 is profiting ($$$$$$$) because ..........

Im sure the figure to make a console such as ps3 is nice and round...like 299. The companies involved making the ps3 go to that extra mile so sony doesn't have to deal with change...

Other costs associated like packaging, distributioon, store's cut of sales and marketing expences have to be taken into account. On top of that, SCE failed to make a blockbuster game for themselves this year. Nothing they made was on the level of gears of war fable 2 wii fit or mario kart. Lbp was bundled and had a massive ad campaign. I doubt it profited. Also?the PS3 had the worst software sales for the year of the big 3.

LBP probablly profitted less than the 250k mark. LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Most HD games usually profit around there and high budget games usually profit around the 350k-500k mark with blockbuster games (Like MGS4) needing like 1million. And we all know how small of a studio Media Molecule is.

the CONSOLE might cost $299 to make..but throw in the peripherals (still not HD ones, wtf?), the controller ($50), the game ($60), and whatever else they include, and you're right back around that $400 mark

controllers are not 50 dollars. Accessories make a good amount of profit for the manufacturers. And the games are usually first party and they dont cost 60 dollars to produce. More like 10 at most.

Even if LBP did profit, it wasn't a huge cash cow like gears of war or mario kart. Sadly, that is Sony's best selling first party game of the entire year. They probably lost money on MGS4 FOR licencing fees on the bundle and the exclusivity contract with konami. It was a rough year for Sony no matter how you cut the cake. To make things worse, microsoft even made their own singstar its doing very well. Ouch!

It wouldn't be priced at $399/400€ at this situation if it cost that little to manufacture. Well, unless other things make the price higher but I doubt they'd have that much effect on it.

its not first party... my suggestion get out of this thread a learn a few thngs about sony. then come back because you are insanely wrong

MGS4 was big enough to mask the losses of the ps3 which was more expensive to manufacture then compared to now because the chipset was 65/65 and now its 45/65 so MGS4's profit was massive.

What does singstar have to do with anything... just troll comment i suppose

Well Sony will be happy to learn that the PS3 costs so little to manufacture. They always do seem to be the last to know how successful they really are. Someone email Reeves the link!

not at all. People over exagerate expenses of games. Which the typical HD game is less than 10 million. With bigger than media molecule studios

The average game sells less than 300k. which means games have to profit before that.
