Forums - Sales - The PS3 return ? Exclusivities won't help ...

MGS4 did some moving on PS3 hardware//Final Fantasy I doubt that would cause any movement considering the confusion of Final Fanasy XIII being on the 360 also. And who knows if Microsoft will try to spit some more dough to Square Enix to release Final Fantasy XIII on the 360 in Japan//GT5 will improve but some of these games that already made a name for themselves are starting to wear thin. So let's just see what sales these games alone do.

Side note: inFamous looks freaking awesome!!! I just watched the trailers on Gametrailers.com//Just wow!!!

FF are you joking, it will move tons of consoles in Japan, there is no way it wont happen. CC moved the 77,777 LE PSP consoles in like a week, and FF is one of the biggest franchises ever

GT 5 Prologue moved many consoles, 5 will. All previous entries have reached nearly 10m or more, the lowest main series game is at 9.37m, I have no doubt these games will move consoles

You guys honestly believe that the Wii is selling for any reason other than it having the game lineup that most gamers prefer

yeah.. it's called price. you'd have to be pretty ignorant to ignore it.

The Wii was by far the cheapest console upon release, which in turn helped it gain steam/momentum and popularity.

bottom line is that it takes 3 things to sell a system.

1. Pricing

2. Marketing

3. Software lineup.

anyone that thinks only one of these are enough to be a top selling console needs a reality check.

Unfortunatly for Sony, they are JUST starting to get number 3 (and perhaps number 2) down.

Pricing: I now await the day where the 360 will outsell the Wii, oh wait, let me guest it doesn't count because...errrr.. right, right, momentum forget the party line for a minute here.

Marketing: Yeah because Microsoft don't spend a shit load of money on marketing, no sir.

Give it up, trying to say that the Wii doesn't sell because of its game is crazy. Remove all the software and nobody would buy a Wii, no matter how much marketing or how low the price it it wouldn't sell, for the simple matter that it only play game and if there is no game, what good is it?

The 360 or the PS3 on the other hand, even without software they could sell, by changing the price and the marketing, IOW, by selling them much cheaper and advertising them as DVD/BR player.

Hrmm. you're not very smart are you?

I never said the Wii's softwareline was not a factor, I just said that software isn't the only factor in which it gains it's success. You need to learn to read and comprehend before getting defensive.

By the time the 360 had already gotten cheaper than the Wii, the Wii had already gotten a grip on the mainstream audience. How? by none other than, pricing and marketing. Marketing isn't only defined by how much money companies spend on promotions, it's how the companies give their product an idenity. The Wii was marketed as being the cheapest console that can cater to the entire family. Make the Wii a $400 console and market it towards the "core" audience and see how well Wii sports and MKwii sells. If you're really trying to argue that it only takes software to sell a console, then you really need to check yourself. If software was the only reason for the Wii's success, then plugNplay would have taken over the videogame industry years ago with the gamecube in second place.

How many people who are hardcore Gran Turismo or Final Fantasy fans already own a PS3 though? Many of them have probably already picked the system up in anticipation of those games (GT5 Prolouge is also already out).

This sounds exactly like Nintendo fans during the GameCube era. Wait for Super Mario Sunshine! Wait for Zelda! Wait for Resident Evil 4! etc. etc. etc. They got boosts, sure, but it was never a sustained push, and the same thing has happened to the PS3.

I call it "third place-itis" only difference is this generation around it's Sony that got it.

I think it's selling because of Wii Sports, Wii Fit, and the Wiimote. MK Wii, Wii Play, and SMG are just gravy. Games do not boost Wii sales, supply does. The Wii could outsell the PS3 and 360 in 2009 if Nintendo stopped releasing games for the system and let third parties take over.

The PS3/360 exclusives provide a nice spike for a week or two, but only price cuts give lasting effects.

Do sequels to games that are already well tied/established to a platform brand really even cause huge sales surges?

Definitely worth thinking about.

Final Fantasy X didn't cause a surge for the PS2, because the PS2 was already selling well month to month.

Super Mario Galaxy really didn't cause a huge surge in Wii sales, but the Wii was already doing great.

Halo 3 really didn't boost XBox 360 sales all that much.

The people who want Mario/Zelda/Final Fantasy/Halo etc. already know which consoles those games are coming to.

It's IPs that are relatively new/unknown like Grand Theft Auto 3 (sure a sequel, but new to most people), Wii Sports, Mortal Kombat on the Genesis, Donkey Kong Country, etc. that historically have been the game changers, and these games usually come out of nowhere.

Well , its gonna be an uphill struggle for sony thats for sure.

Here in the UK every multiplatform game that has been advertised on T.V. (You know, Guitar hero, Need for speed: undercover ect) for the last few months ends with the word's "out now on xbox 360, console from £129.99"

Sony are getting beaten at their own game (Advertising)

Do you see that many ps3 adverts? i hardly watch tv so i dont know, but when i do watch i see wii and 360 adverts all the time, i could probably count on one hand the amount of ps3 adverts ive seen since it was released.

Advertising, PR, image....all much more important than silly insignificant game lineups, when it comes to sales.

Marketing is a trillion dollar industry, guys and gals.

Do you really think that God of War 3 can trump all of that?

No. If you want sales for your console, you need marketing. Game lineups are merely a tool of marketing. So are price cuts.

The sales game is about marketing, not lineups. You can't determine how the end product is gonna look like, simply by examining the tools used to create it.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.
